So this is part 1 of a three-shot I’ll be doing, as an alternate ending to my story “Knights in Shining Armor”. 당신 don’t HAVE to have read “Knights” first, but if 당신 want to, 당신 can.

He slid on the ground, the rough earth tearing his 셔츠 and leaving deep scratches in his skin. His blood mingled with the puddles all around him, the bloodstained dirt and broken glass told him he was close. His throat was parched, his lungs burned, but he kept going. He had to find her, if it was the last thing he did. Where are you? he thought desperately. Aisling, where have 당신 gone?

And all I can taste is this moment
And all I can breathe is your life
'Cause sooner 또는 later it's over
I just don't want to miss 당신 tonight...

There. Jackson pulled himself up, surveying the building. He smashed the glass, dragging his thin, ragged body through the hole, wincing as his exposed skin was sliced 의해 the jagged edge. He dropped down to the floor, the blood oozing from his cuts. He tried to get to his feet, but found his legs were too weak, so he collapsed again, resorting to dragging himself across the cold tile. The only light in the room came from the hole he had smashed in the wall, and that was only a sliver of a moon, on a cloudy night. He managed to pull himself across the floor, having no idea where he was going in the darkness, until finally, he saw a pinprick of light. He followed it.
The light was coming from another room, floored with the same cold tile. It came from a tiny stub of a candle, flickering, most of the wax already melted down, dripping in long tendrils down to the floor. He dragged himself into the room, and what the light illuminated paralyzed him.

Jackson let out a wail. The blood. Why was there so much blood? He somehow managed to draw closer, the thick crimson liquid staining his palms and his skinned knees. He lifted one hand, the blood dripping down his arm, and examined the torn piece of dark fabric that sat in his fingers. He wiped it off. It was a piece of her shirt. A few feet away--she would have known the exact distance, a thought that made his 심장 stir and his blood bubble--lay the rest of the shirt, and not too far from that lay her pants and undergarments, all torn and bloodstained. And there lay the body. He forced himself to come up to it, and he screamed again, hot tears spilling down his dirt-streaked cheeks. Shaking with sobs, he stared at her body, naked, broken, lifeless, pressing his hands into her neck, wiping away the layer of blood that was still oozing out. He carressed her cheek, burying his head in her thick dark hair. “I’m too late!” he wailed. “Oh, Aisling...I’m too late...I’m too late...”
He stared at her glassy turquoise eyes, still open, widened in terror--her last moment of horror before the blade pressed into her neck--and carefully, he closed them, letting his head drop to her chest, ignoring the pools of blood. His voice cut the night, as, softly, he began to sing.

He paused, letting his emotions overtake him. Later, he knew, there would be anger. Later, it would come, no matter how hard he tried to stop it. But now, there was no anger. Only grief, bitter, guilty, solid grief. His voice dropped to a whisper.
