I think in the beginning, Harry reminded him to much of James. I believe it was too much of a challenge to separate his memories of James from the way Harry looked, especially at and in Hogwarts, the site of all his most horrible memories of James and the Mauraders, and Lily's defection. Quite frankly, I've always believed that it was at the moment when Albus told him his plan that Harry must die at the 'fated' moment, that Harry became real as a person to him. That was when Harry was separated most definitely from James' image and placed in the same category that Snape held, that as 'pawn' in the game being played between Voldemort and Albus. It truly made Harry and Severus equals in the same field. And maybe brought Severus to a new understanding of all Harry's (and Hermione and Ron) past misdeeds as Harry struggled against other's control of his life. Something I'm sure that Severus felt but suppressed due to his overwhelming feelings of guilt and struggle for atonement. Can 당신 imagine the quagmire of emotion that filled Severus upon casting Avada Kadavra on Albus? Yes, it was at Albus' request. But, have 당신 not ever felt betrayal at a parent figure 또는 some other important person for not telling 당신 a truth they knew, from hiding it from you? 당신 have to mean Avada Kadavra when 당신 cast it. Yes, he was doing it upon Albus' request, yes, it was a mercy to him, yes, it was incorporated in Albus' plan. But, here was the man that had quided him in all his actions to protect this child of Lily's, even though this child constantly reminded him of James, but he did his job because this was Lily's child, and to suddenly find that Albus planned for Harry to die all along, without sharing that with him. I think 의해 that time, it was the absolute for Severus. He was probably glad to die before Harry. Can 당신 imagine after all those years, to be told Harry HAD to die, and that he must stand 의해 when it happens, after having to stand 의해 earlier when Charity B. was killed in front of him? I think it was at the moment that Albus told him Harry must die, that Severus 로스트 all hope. So, long answer short, I don't think Severus Snape always cared about Harry. I don't think he 'cared' about Harry at all. I think Harry was just James' child, that was born 의해 Lily, till that fateful moment Albus told him about Harry's fate. Then Harry became a real person, became Lily's son, in Severus' eyes. Not that Severus' would have 'cared' for Harry at that point, but empathized with him, that I could see.
