Ariel is a mermaid who was passionate and determined. She was curious and she was interested with human world.

But unfortunately her flaws just made me not like her much. She was being irresponsible, ignorant (to listen her father's reason why she wasn't allowed to stays near human world), and she was very reckless to give her voice to Ursula (still don't get how she trust Ursula but not with her father or Sebastian). She never think about the consequence of her actions. And she seems never learn from her wrong decisions. She only cares to her self and her dreams.

But still there are some traits I like from her. She's playful and somehow she was funny.

Loved by some and hated by others, Ariel is one of (in my point of view) princesses with more realistic personalities that I have seen (what makes her loved / hated by some) with their qualities and defects (which in my case , makes me love her more than other classics like Branca and Aurora). Among her strengths for me are: determined to achieve her goals (though sometimes she makes some mistakes with that) instead of waiting / being passive, she has hobbies (collecting things and singing), she has a sense of humor (which I I find it rare in classical princesses) and as human, she is sensitive and passionate (and that does not make her weak in my opinion). Another controversial fact among many feminists that I disagree with is the fact that she was married at the end and "changed" by a man, which in my view is mistaken because she always showed a will to be human (love came as a consequence of that dream and she could be human in one way or another).

She's a very flawed character, but that's isn't necessarily a bad thing. I've personally never liked her because of her flaws that I find selfish, but she really is a lovely character. She's bold, she escapes her old life in search for one she's always dreamed of, she's passionate and wild with a bubbly personality, by all means she should be one of my favorites. I think why I dislike Ariel is her demeanor and her uncaring behavior towards her friends and responsibilities. She thinks impulsively more than morally and goes to an evil sea witch out of spite for Sebastian and her father, I understand her resolve, but at the end of the day it's just selfish. A "you did this to me, so I'm going to do this and disregard the consequences!" I can't admire that kind of character. I also really don't like the way she expects all of her friends to follow her whim, without even a moment of gratitude. She's not god-awful, but she definitely fits the category of an irresponsible teenager that will do what she wants when she wants without much consideration for others.

Loads of people hate her, or dislike her, basically because Ariel is not "submissive" to her xenophobic intolerant father, and because people "interpret" that Ariel doesn't care for her friends or family.

The movie NEVER shows Ariel as apathetic. Contrary to the vast litany of interpretations of Ariel's misdeeds, and haters loudly decrying that Ariel has no consideration for anyone else--- this could not be further from what the movie explicitly displays. Ariel never leaves Flounder in danger, she never leaves Sebastian in danger, nor does Ariel leave when her father makes a foolish twist bargain, and is captured as a polyp/slave of Ursula's. Ariel fights for her interests, and protects all of her friends and family along the way. Ariel's haters just refuse to see this, or to acknowledge what is right there in the movie.

As others have already mentioned, Ariel is one of the most flawed characters in the lineup, and this is precisely why I adore her. She's very realistic and relatable, and far more feminist than most people give her credit for. She's one of the only princesses who actively pursues her love interest, rather than being the passive character who is being pursued. She is not afraid to put her needs before the needs of others. She makes mistakes. Nothing will stand in her way. My only issue with her is that I don't feel she grows or learns anything from the mistakes she makes.

There is just something about Ariel that puts a smile on my face. Her passion and enthusiasm for the human world is extremely endearing, and while she does make some reckless decisions, I find the journey of following her hopes and desires to be so empowering.

Ever since I was a little boy, I have always been facinated by Ariel. Even now, at the age of 33, she's still my favorite Disney Character! I have always loved her! And always will do! She has a special place in my heart! If I'm in a bad mood or have had a bad day, I can always turn to Ariel, be it in the movies, the tv-series or even the comics and she makes me smile! That girl really got my soul. I'm so thankful to Disney for making Ariel as my whole life would never have been the same without this charming little mermaid in it.

I honestly think Ariel is the true definition of big dreamer. I love everything about her. For as long as I can remember, I have always been fascinated with new things. I like to think Ariel has had a huge impact on my life. Whenever I’m down, I always watch TLM or listen to the soundtrack cause it makes me feel better

she is an inspiration to truly following your heart, that dreams have a price. She is funny, curious, loving, resourceful. she is also selfish, reckless, carefree, lost in her own dream world. This wonderful mix makes her one of the most interesting characters. My biggest concern is that while she chases down her dream, she is never explicitly shown to realize or grow from her mistakes. She is left at all is well that ends well, which is not a great way to build a role model personality. I like her what she is and dislike her for what she is.
