Skeletons are Coming Out of the Closet – The Good Wife – Season 6 Episode 4 – “Oppo Research”
Last week we saw Alicia rethinking her decision about not running for State’s Attorney. She seems to be ready to go head to head with Castro, especially after the great amount of trouble he has caused her and her firm over the last several weeks. Will Alicia take the plunge into politics?
This week begins with Alicia preparing for what looks like may be a dinner for two. The doorbell rings and it is Eli. It seems like Alicia has gone to a lot of trouble for this meeting with Eli and she seems to be nervous.
Eli explains to her that things will move fast but they are prepared. He tells her that if the election was held today, and it was just against her and Castro, she would win by eight points. She will have to announce her candidacy by Monday, which is only four days away. Alicia is looking for the bad, what can Castro come after her with? Eli assures her that they have some of their own inside information on Castro should it get messy.
The doorbell rings and Eli tells her it is her new campaign manager, Johnny Elfman. Alicia is shocked by this because she wanted Eli to be her campaign manager. Eli explains that he is Peter’s Chief of Staff, so she needs someone who can commit to her full time. She meets Mr. Elfman who asks to speak to Eli alone. It seems he has reservations about working with Alicia just as she has reservations about him.
They sit down to talk and Eli begins with her announcement. They want Peter to introduce her and she is a little concerned with going that route. Alicia notices that Elfman seems to not be very talkative, when he asks her why she wants to run. She explains about the corruption taking place in the State’s Attorney office. She can tell that Elfman seems to have some issue with her and she asks him to come out with it. He tells her that he takes this and his candidates very seriously. She explains that she does as well and not to waste her time.
Alicia gets a call from Diane and Cary. Bishop received a subpoena about his real estate holdings. Cary is concerned because he feels that this is really about him. Alicia agrees with Diane that they should just comply. Cary explains that if they do this, it will allow the State’s Attorney to set precedent over his case.
Peter calls Eli and asks for an update about Alicia’s meeting with him. It seems Eli has dug up what Castro may use against Alicia but Eli is not keen on talking with Peter about it. Elfman tells Alicia that she needs a more positive reason for running for office. Elfman then moves forward with taking Alicia through the opposition research that has been done on her. Alicia is shocked to see so much paperwork but Eli tells her this is decision time. She can decide to look at this or she can decide not to run. Alicia wants to move forward.
They begin looking through the research done on her. They talk about her clients first. Elfman explains that she will need to drop Bishop as a client. They go on to talk about her son. Elfman begins discussing how they will handle the fact that her son got his girlfriend pregnant last year and they had an abortion. You can tell that Elfman thinks Alicia already knew this but she didn’t, and she is shocked. Alicia calls Peter and tells her what she just found out about their son. She is ready to cut Zach off. She calls Zach and leaves a message for him to call her back.
Eli gets a call from Peter who asks him why he told Alicia about Zach having an abortion. Peter is worried about Eli bringing up the intern. Eli again explains that he can’t be a part of this. They continue with Alicia on the research. Next up is her mom and her brother. It seems her brother is having an affair with a married Palestinian man who does gay pornography under an assumed name. They need her brother to lay low for a little while. Her mother spanked a five year old in a department store and they need her to get her mom to apologize to the family.
They next bring up Finn and Alicia is just amazed by how much people care about her life. Elfman next goes to bring up the governor and Eli stops him. Alicia assures him she is ready to hear it if it is about Peter, but Eli assures her there is nothing to discuss at the moment. She asks if it is about Kalinda and Eli seems surprised by this. Elfman asks if they looked into that situation and Eli assures them they will if need be. They end their meeting and Elfman praises Alicia on the fact that she has handled this meeting better than any other candidate he has worked for.
Alicia meets with Bishop along with Diane and Cary. They explain that they will have to drop him as a client. They explain that they represent Cary and Bishop and they are running into problems with defending both of them. They give him a list of firms who they would recommend him to work with. He says no. It seems he is going to play hardball to keep Alicia as his attorney.
Eli meets with Kalinda and confronts her about the affair. Kalinda tells Eli he has nothing to worry about.
Owen and Alicia’s mom have come to her home to meet with her. Alicia explains to them that she is thinking about running for State’s Attorney. They are shocked at this news. She tells her mother that she needs her to apologize to the family. She then turns her attention to Owen and asks to speak with him privately. She talks to him about his current relationship. Owen leaves without saying a word to her. As he leaves she gets a call from Zach but ignores it.
Peter talks with Eli and asks if he has an issue with him. He assures Eli he is not trying to undercut Eli. He agrees to let Eli fire the return. Eli is more than happy to take care of that for him.
Alicia meets with Finn and talks to him about the photo of him leaving her apartment. He assures her that she has nothing to worry about. She tells him she is thinking about running and he assures her that he is happy for her. He tells her that Castro wants to get her out of the race by hitting her where she is vulnerable.
On her way home, Alicia gets stopped by a cop. When the cop approaches her he calls her by name and asks her to if she has been drinking. When she asks how he knows her name, he asks her to step out of the car.
The cop makes Alicia take a sobriety test. Alicia can see that people are already taking pictures of her stop as they drive by. After the stop, Alicia calls Eli and tells him that she thinks it was a set-up. Bishop catches up with Kalinda and asks her to get in his car so he can speak with her for a minute. He tells Kalinda that the firm tried to drop him as a client and he wants to know why. Kalinda explains that she has no idea why and that he should talk to Alicia. She admits that Alicia may be considering running for State’s Attorney. This seems to intrigue Bishop.
Elfman facilitates the meeting between Veronica and the parents of the child she spanked. Alicia shows up to the meeting as well. Veronica apologizes but the mom also wants fifty thousand dollars. Alicia explains that they are not going to do that and the meeting pretty much goes from bad to worse.
When Alicia gets home Grace shows her a website that is a pack that is collecting money on her behalf. Eli tells Alicia it is not them. Elfman tells her it is a popular expression of grass roots approval. Eli gets told that the intern has showed back up and is in Peter’s office. Eli goes in and introduces Eli to Ramona Lighten. It turns out Ramona is the mother of Lauren, the intern. Peter explains to Eli that this is why he wanted Lauren on staff, not because he wanted to sleep with her.
Zach calls his mom and apologizes for the situation with Neesa and that he didn’t tell her. She tells Zach that she is running for State’s Attorney. She basically tells Zach what he will say if he is questioned about her parenting and hangs up on him. She tells Elfman that she is running. Elfman says great and then shows her the photo that has been released on her traffic stop and the blog that accompanies it saying she will be going to rehab.
Bishop meets Alicia after work and explains that he will be taking her advice and hiring another law firm. He also tells Alicia that he will make sure it is known that she fired him and that he is very upset about it, so it helps her. It turns out that he is the one that set up the pack for her campaign and that he will do whatever makes her and her campaign look best. It seems Bishop is a fan and is all for her running for office.
So with all this support and the decision being made to run, Alicia may have quite a battle in front of her, going head to head with Castro. Will the support of so many be enough to win and how will this affect her family? Be sure to tune in next week to see how this plays out!
