1. It'd have been progressive for the sequel trilogy to have a mixed race relationship as it's main couple, in the same way as it was progressive to have a female main character and a black main character.
2. Both Finn and Rey know what it's like to be alone, abandoned and to not know who their biological family is.
3. When Finn first saw Rey, his immediate reaction was to want to protect her from those trying to attack and rob her.
4. Once he saw that she was handling it herself before he could reach her, he just watched with admiration.
