A family tragedy struck in the middle of The X Factor, showing Zayn what really matters in life.
When Zayn Malik was cut from The X Factor UK on the boot camp episode that aired on September 26, 2010, he couldn't believe that his dreams for a solo career came to a screeching halt. But moments later, he was put into One Direction and he soon realized why things were meant to happen that way.
Together as a group, he was able to lean on his bandmates during the stressful competition - both musically and personally. ''As a band, we're really close,'' Zayn says. But when Zayn's grandfather, Walter, passed away during the semifinals of the competition, One Direction's strength was put to the test.
An Empty Space
Heartbroken and devastated, Zayn quickly left 런던 for his native Bradford, U.K. as soon as he heard the news of his grandpa's death. ''It was horrible not being at 집 around the time it all happened,'' Zayn says. ''He had been ill for a while and he had a few strokes, so in a way, I knew it was coming.''
But nothing could have truly prepared Zayn for losing the grandpa he was so close to growing up. ''He was your typical happy chappie and he was constantly joking around and smiling,'' Zayn says. ''I have such good memories of him from when I was growing up.''
While Zayn focused on being with his family through the tragedy, One Direction tired to carry on without him. ''Being so close now, we feel like brothers,'' Harry Styles said at the time. ''We just want to give our support to Zayn and his family.''
''It was so nice to be with them''
Even though it was a crucial week in the competition in which they were trying to secure a spot in the finals, the guys knew what they had to do. ''All the boys came down to the funeral to support me,'' Zayn says. ''It was so nice to be with them at that time.''
And not just that, One Direction was part of the service. ''I was so glad that [my grandpa] got to see us sing ''You Are So Beautiful'' on the show - it was his 가장 좋아하는 song,'' Zayn says. ''He said that he wanted that version played at his funeral - and it was, which was very emotional, but really lovely.''
Picking Back Up
With his bandmates 의해 his side, Zayn summoned the strength to return to The X Factor just in time to perform Snow Patrol's ''Chasing Cars'' - and impress the judges. ''It's about picking up after what has been a very tough week,'' judge and mentor Simon Cowell said. ''I am proud of 당신 as much people as much as I am as artists.''
And Zayn couldn't agree more, having learned first hand just how special his bandmates really were. ''It was really helped having them there,'' He says.
