Considering it was a story altered to target families, it was well-done. Being an avid fan of Greek Mythology (for most of my life), I do understand that the story was way different from how myth had told it. Of course then it would have been rated-R and the kids wouldn't have been able to enjoy it, no matter how "wrong" the story was. Just my opinion. :)

Yeah that's one of my favorite Disney movies, they did murder the mythology... but some of the stuff it would have been hard not to. I still love the movie. either way.

Of course there were some things I didn't like - like the whole Hera-the-doting-and-loving-mother (she is far from that) but you couldn't have made a Disney-movie with the real Hera, so yeah, I liked it all in all

Yes, it was a fun retelling, and I thouroughly enjoyed it, but the second answer rung more true. This strayed so far from the original it was a completely different story on its own (proabably why I liked it instead of deploring it for bringing shame to the original). The personalities were a little over Disney-fied (though I do love a Hades with a Rhode Island accent)!

I love it! One of my favorite Disney movies!
They do a lot of stuff that I didn'y agree with, though.
.Why is Hades always the evil guy?
.Hera is portrayed as a sweet, caring mother in the movie. Which was actually something I was glad to see^^
.Megara and Hercules appear to have a loving relationship. I'm glad to see that too:)

I only saw reviews but one point was clear: Hercules was teamed with Pegasus (the winged horse). Outrageous! The story of Bellephron and Pegasus is a particularly unique Greek tale with its own themes about bravery/thought&heroism. The Hercules cartoon movie ignored all this by having Hercules brought together with a 'baby foal Pegasus'. My little (ancient Greek) pony! Disney could have done much better than this with such a rich Greek legend as Pegasus.

Also - I saw some reviews which suggested that Hades was stealing the show. He, not Hercules, was usually featured on the newspaper adverts for the movie saying "We kiss, we dance, we shamooz, we go home happy, whaddya say?" In ancient Greek myth, Hades obviously did not have a sense of humour; Disney made an entirely different character here.

In every era, old stories/myths etc have been retold in ways which suit the sociopolitical needs of the retllers, but what does Disney's add to the mix?

I wish that they had stuck more closely to the origanal! also I didn't like the look of the characters themselves! Disney has done waaaaaay better!

Sure the Disney version wasn't 100% accurate to greek mythology but it was such a great lighthearted movie, while there were some things I didn't agree to like Hera being his real mum and that they used the more roman version of dionysus ( or Bacchus as the Romans called him) by making him a chubby balding man rather than handsome with wavy dark hair version which the Greeks used most but besides that I still enjoyed the movie.
