The old Rihanna?

Oh well, i think she was fantastic.
She wasn't afraid to talk/sing about important issues affecting women, she was strong and confident and often encouraged young girls in her interveiws not to feel pressured to dress a certain way to please a man if you don't feel comfortable with.

But this NEW Rihanna?
Hmm...Lemme' see:
- Sings constantly about being a volentary sex-slave to a man, existing only to please him sexually and "do whatever he likes", whenever he wants it.
- Sung a song about how thrilling and great it is to be whipped and in chains via your partner. About how brilliant it is to be his property tied up by a rope. (S+M)
- Is apparently dating (or at least dueting) with the man who opressed and violated her, beating her up horribly.
- Thinks lust is the same thing as love, at least according to her songs.

So to recap:
If the NEW Rihanna is a feminist heroine, god save us...

I'm not sure which is the "true" her...but I do believe she doesn't help anything anymore.

I think that she has been having some issues, identity wise, since the incident of Chris Brown being a royal douche-bag, but I'm not really a fan of her new stuff at all.

Do you think a woman who engages in S&M as the submissive partner cannot be a feminist?

^ Well, I think BDSM full stop is worrying. If you love someone, why on earth would you want to whip them and hurt them? Thats an act of hate, surely? A lot of people have been injured (either intentionally or unintentionally) through this practise and in my head it's assisted self-harm. Sadism or masochism is never ok. Its a mental disease.

I also think BDSM is also a lot about dominance and power, which is often followed by opression. Someone with a big enough of an ego to want to own their partner in duct-tape and burning cigarette on him/her whenever he or she squirms is clearly has some repressive violent nature in them. If that is left untreated, without professional help, that could escalate horribly.

BDSM, really, is dangerous.

I agree with pandawinx on BDSM. I don't understand why abuse is somehow ok if you just label it "sex". I'm not condeming anyone who's into it, but to not do a feminist analysist of it and treat it like some sacred cow above criticism is kind of ridiculous.

I don't know much about the old Rihanna, and though I admit I do like her music...well, some of it *guilty look*. A lot of her lyrics are slutty and trashy, and NOT empowering in any way to women.
