Yes, I've done that a lot.

I've tried but it always turns out to be one of those stories where the character assumes the person's a jerk but turns out to be wrong fics! (lol!)

I don't think I've done this or plan to do this, anyway. I tend to keep characters as they are in canon.

My favorite characters are always villains so usually in my fics they start out evil but get redemption arcs.

^I suppose it's a lot easier to do when the favourites are canonically villains. It'd be almost OOC to do otherwise all of the time.

I feel like this is one of those things where it has to be done in a certain way or it just doesn't work in a sense. Or one of those things where the fic is told from the canon antagonist's POV and you're supposed to root for them so in a way the canon protagonist becomes the fanfic antagonist...if that makes any sense.
