May be a stupid question, but please help?

I've heard a lot about Doctor Who and I've had a mind to start watching it. I was just wondering how the storyline operates exactly. It's supposed to be a long-running series and everything and I just want to know if I'll be able to understand what's going on if I start watching from series 1 (2005) ie. will there be references, etc. that I might not understand. Wikipedia says the series adheres to original continuity. I'm just really confused.

당신 don't need to watch the old episode to understand what's going on. The series adheres to original continuity but the show is made so that everyone can understand even if 당신 never watch any of the old episode.
So 당신 can start 의해 watching serie 1. No worries.

당신 don't need to worry about anything, each doctor who episode has it's own individual story (exept two-parters) so 당신 don't have to watch an entire series just to understand whats happening now
