“The Laughing Gnome;” Has an eccentric charm about it, despite the dad-joke-esque character of the gnome jokes which it’s riddled with. The magic of “The Laughing Gnome” is actually in its absurdity. The sped-up voice of the gnome and the pointlessness so effortlessly encapsulated in this song gives it a wealth of appeal not only to the very young but to all those with a ripe sense of humour. The humour is not actually in the element of humour which the song provides through the gnome medium, but through the notion of implementing this technique - of speeding up sound- not to further the marketability and appeal of the song itself. You’ll find yourself laughing at the song to the point where 당신 discover that you’ve been laughing with the gnomes the whole time, as their every intent and purpose was to make 당신 laugh at them.
For my part, I think that “The Laughing Gnome” is good for the occasional chuckle, but artistically, it was a real let-down, particularly at the point which Bowie had reached in his career – a few years down the track of music, without a known song to his name, he needed to focus on making it big before he could lay back and make the 음악 which pleased him but did not cater to those who his position on the public stage would give him responsibilities to: his consumers.
