The 아바타 is a powerful being who has been

reincarnated over many lifetimes. It is the

Avatar's duty to master all four elements, and to

use that power to keep balance amongst the four

nations. The Avatars follow a cycle, so when an

아바타 dies the spirit is reborn the 다음 nation

in the cycle: It goes Water, Earth, Fire, and

Air. There can only be one 아바타 at a time. The

아바타 also possesses the ability to meditate

into the Spirit World. They are also able to

contact the spirits of 이전 Avatars through

meditation and gain wisdom from them. The 아바타

can also enter what is called "the 아바타 State."

In the 아바타 State, the 아바타 is at their most

powerful, but also their most vulnerable. The

아바타 State is signified 의해 a glowing of the

eyes (and in Aang's case, glowing 애로우 tattoos).

When in the 아바타 State, an Avatar's bending

strengh is heightened and he 또는 she can perform

very powerful moves. But if an 아바타 is killed

while in the 아바타 State, the 아바타 cycle is

broken, and the 아바타 ceases to exist.
