In some way, I can totally see his point of view. Although the Phantom would never hurt Christine (^he didn't really mean the war part), Ralph couldn't know possibly know that.
But the viewers do, so he ends up looking as an overprotective jerk in the eyes of most fans. :/

No. He IS hero. Phantom dragged Chrissy around, pushed her to the floor, called as viper, and tried force her to marry him. Forced bride = raped bride. Christine is NOT thing to be dragged around, she loved Raoul and chose him.

technacly, Erik wouldn't hurt her physically, but mabe emotoinally, because she is a bit to innocent for his pationet love
