Chapter One
The emergency room was nearly empty for about five PM, and bright lights bounced off the silver bracelet on her wrist. She stood nervously besides her friend, a mug of steaming hospital coffee in her hand. Her eyes flickered between the Englishman that bobbed back and forth on his toes, watching the doctors in the room nervously, and the 침대 where one of her best 프렌즈 lay.
After a few minutes, she began to copy her costar's actions, bobbing up and down as well, the coffee sloshing quietly in her paper cup. Her eyes were focused on the two doctors that circled the corner bed.
“She can't be … she can't be ...” Hugh's voice had 로스트 his American accent and he stared unblinkingly at the bed. The rocking of his feet had increased slightly, and his voice was barely above a whisper as he muttered under his breath. He left Olivia's side and began to pace the halls, ignoring the stares he was beginning to get from various staff members, as well as the other people in the waiting rooms.
A few hushed whispers circulated the crowd, upon spotting the three newcomers into the hospital’s emergency room; mainly focusing on the occupant of the corner bed, and the man who paced the hallways. Some quiet dings were heard, and Hugh ignored them, knowing that some paparazzi shots were probably going to appear within a few days of him pacing the emergency room of the Cedar Sinai hospital. He also wasn’t surprised to see phones being pulled out of pockets, as he assumed people were going to begin “tweeting” the news of his appearance. The ding of his own cell phone caused his to jump slightly, and he pulled the device from his pocket, wondering who would be sending him a text message at this moment.
Got tix to fly out 2ight. Do 당신 have a key to Lisa’s place? – Bonnie
Hands shaking, Hugh glanced again to the woman in the corner bed, and he swallowed. After typing out a hurried reply; informing Bonnie that he had a key to her daughter’s home, he made his way towards the side of the main attending doctor in the emergency room. “How much longer will it be until 당신 know how long she’ll need to stay here?”
“They’re just about done with her initial work-up,” the attending didn’t let Hugh meet his eyes, and he shuffled the papers in his hands a bit nervously. “We’ll at least need to keep her for an extra 일 또는 two – it seems the meds may have allowed her to lapse into a coma...” He stopped, hearing Hugh’s shoes squeak as the older man crossed the room in a hurry, his only motive to keep the rest of the cast informed.
“What?” Brown eyes turned on Hugh’s silhouette as he reappeared outside the main hallway, “How is she….?” She swallowed, not sure if she wanted to know the answer.
“She’s … in a coma,” Hugh’s voice shook, and he sank into a chair. “They want to keep her, at least a few days – just to monitor her vitals.” He sniffed disdainfully, “This idea’s shit in my opinion, Lisa should be somewhere that she’s familiar with, not the hospital. She should be 집 …” he stopped, hearing Olivia make a protest.
“Unless you’ll be paying for the extra bills of a live-in nurse, then she’s going to be fine here.” The much younger woman glanced at the cell phone in Hugh’s hand; “Have 당신 called her family? 또는 the cast?” She paused, “I mean, I’m flattered that 당신 decided to call me first, but why? Lisa and I aren’t the best of friends. Sure we hang out together, but why not call Robert … 또는 Sara?”
“Because you’re like her,” Hugh replied simply, “That’s good enough.”
“For 당신 또는 for her?” The 질문 was direct. “You’re blaming yourself for this, I can see it in your eyes, and your actions; 당신 사랑 her.”
“I … I don’t.” Hugh replied, his response quick. “She’s a good friend, and I’m worried that she won’t …” he stopped and swallowed, looking down at his feet.
“Excuse me,” the attending had reappeared, “if 당신 two have a moment, I have some news.” His voice remained monotone, and his expression stoic, and he waved the two 프렌즈 into the emergency room again.
“She’s going to … make it?” Hugh whispered silently.
“She’s in a coma, and we’ve moving her up to one of our private ICU rooms. Can one of 당신 … stay with her?” The attending looked between the two cast members, “It’s best that she has someone with her.”
It was as if there was some unspoken agreement between the two friends; and slowly, Hugh gave a nod, locking his eyes, not on the attending, but on some mysterious point that only he could see.
“I’ll stay, but her parents are flying in tonight, so it’s possible that they will want me to leave once they arrive here.” Hugh shifted the weight on his feet, and gave a sideways glance at Olivia, daring her to protest his words. But she didn’t; both of them secretly knew that Bonnie and Alvin would want Hugh to remain at the hospital, 의해 Lisa’s side, until she woke up.
The two costars followed the hospital 침대 that transported their best friend up to the private ICU. Neither of them spoke a word to the nurse during the elevator ride up; Olivia was typing away on her iPhone and Hugh watched Lisa's chest rise and fall gently. Then again, as the elevator dinged, neither of the actors dared to 옮기기 from the small enclosed space, fearing that their coworker may never leave the private ICU room she had been assigned to stay in.
“Hugh,” Olivia whispered softly, “Don't freeze up; 당신 need to be there for Lisa.” She nudged him gently in the small of the back with her finger, pushing him towards the halls, before turning to look at him. “You need be there for her, 당신 cared about her enough to call an ambulance, to come here with her, to wait until they did a work-up on Lisa, to make sure she was all right – 당신 need to stay here with her.” She turned to look down the hall, away from her fellow costar, quietly waiting for his response. “You belong here with her.”
Avoiding her gaze, Hugh nearly ran from the elevator, his sneakers squeaking against the polished tiled floor. He reached the ICU room that Lisa had been assigned to and slipped inside, thankful for the private atmosphere inside. His eyes went immediately to the chart on the rolling table, and the monitors surrounding the bed, then he turned to the nurse who stood in the room. “Thank you,” he avoided the curious eyes the younger man had trained on him and stuffed his hands into his pockets.
“She's going to be okay Hugh,” Olivia stood in the doorway, leaning against the woodwork, her arms folded loosely across her chest. “Stop worrying about loosing your best friend right now,” she stepped inside the room, ignoring the young nurse completely. “You just need to stay here, 의해 her side, until her parents arrive. Then 당신 can let them stay with her.” Resting a hand on Hugh's shoulder, she tried to meet his eyes, hoping to reassure him. “You just need to stay strong for her, and her family.”
Hugh opened his mouth to reply, but thought better of it, knowing Olivia had a point, and looked around at the room, noticing that the nurse had left the two of them in the hospital room with Lisa. Swallowing, he sank into the wooden chair besides the bed, his eyes fixed on the floor, avoiding looking at the woman in the 침대 besides him. After a few seconds, he shifted slightly, leaning back in the char, looking up at his worried coworker.
“Should I … go?” Olivia asked quietly, still standing near the doorway. She still held her phone in her hand and shuffled her feet awkwardly, internally debating about leaving Hugh alone with Lisa, 또는 going to give them some privacy. “Remember, we have a late-night casting call later, and I guess I could … tell everyone … about Lisa..” Pausing, she looked down at her feet, “I know that you'd probably not want to go tonight now that Lisa's here, and either way, 당신 need to be here; I can talk to everyone tonight.”
Crossing the room, she rested a hand on her costar's shoulder; “You know how much she means to 당신 Hugh, no one in the cast is as blind as 당신 think we are. 당신 사랑 her and don't think 당신 could handle loosing her.” She flinched away slightly as Hugh's sudden gaze turned on her, and she gave a quiet smile to reassure him. “Stay here with her tonight you, she needs 당신 의해 her side right now.”
“I … know.” Hugh shook his shoulder slightly, shaking Olivia's hand off, “But don't say anything – to anyone.” He turned his gaze away from Olivia to look at Lisa, “I just won't show up, and neither will Lisa; as simple as that.”
“No it's not,” Olivia was already at the door, “You can't hide out here with Lisa until she's released, because if I know 당신 Hugh Laurie, 당신 will.” She pushed open the door, leaving Hugh alone with his thoughts, his hand gently holding Lisa's.
