FRISCO, Texas -- For the first time since 2002, Jason Witten and Tony Romo will be in the same football stadium and not be teammates.

Witten will be in his normal position as the Dallas Cowboys’ starting tight end. It will be the 227th straight game he has played for the Cowboys, his 231st overall and the 171st straight start of his career.

Romo will be in the television booth at midfield, calling the game against the Kansas City Chiefs for CBS.

Jason Witten and Tony Romo teamed up for 37 touchdowns in their years together with the Cowboys. 

Witten and Romo became best of friends on and off the field during their 14 seasons together. They arrived as rookies in 2003, Witten as a third-round pick and Romo as an undrafted free agent, taking the airport shuttle bus to a local hotel.

They still talk often even if they no longer see each other every day.

“I think for me it was just the journey of going with him,” Witten said. “I mean 14 years and coming in together and dreaming of an opportunity. Then to kind of see my career take off and him still talking to me about, ‘Hey, this is how the quarterback thinks,’ and then three and a half years into it he gets an opportunity. Every step of the way, it was just a unique opportunity for us. I definitely will reflect on that, but we have plenty of years to do it... now’s not the time.”

Of Witten’s 1,123 receptions, which are fourth most in NFL history, 649 of them came from Romo. They combined for 7,287 yards and 37 touchdowns from 2006-15.

Their last connection came in the first quarter of the 2015 Thanksgiving Day game against the Carolina Panthers for 12 yards. Romo suffered a collarbone injury after that and was lost for the season. He suffered a compression fracture in his back in the 2016 preseason and played just one series with Dak Prescott becoming the starter.

Romo and Witten figure to see each other today for the CBS production meetings. Witten doesn’t expect to see Romo on the field before the game. Sometimes the game analysts, like Troy Aikman, will hang around the field in pregame, but Romo doesn’t expect to be out there.

“You’ll see him and say hello and get to the game,” Witten said. “This is an opportunity for us to get to 5-3 and nobody understands that moreso than him.”
