Well, here we are again. Hello, everyone, and no, this isn’t a dream. A nightmare, maybe, but not a dream. Yes, a new Corner of Horror 기사 after many, many moons have passed. The world was just way too happy and way too kind for me not to come back. I mean, after all, there isn’t anything going on right now to instill fear in people, right? Well, there were a lot of 영화 I watched over my time trapped in my house, not that that’s much different from what I usually do. And with wanting to get back into the horror discussion phase for a bit while I wait to play 더 많이 weird PS2 games, I thought, “Why not mash them all together”? And so… I did. These are my ten 가장 좋아하는 modern horror films. Because while horror 영화 in general still 펌프 out pure garbage, when they get it right, they get it oh so right. Some of them I have talked about a few times, so I’ll brim past those if I don’t have any news thoughts. Now do know that these are horror 영화 I have seen. I have not watched The Invisible Man 또는 Train to Busan. In fact, very few of these films are underground films, most are big budget films. So, I’m sorry all two of 당신 that are going to read this. I just don’t care enough to go out of my way and look for hard to find stuff. Also, for these films to be modern that must be five years old 또는 younger. So anything before 2016 will not be in this article, so no Conjuring 또는 The Babadook. Alight? Good? Grand!
Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark
I talked about this film some time ago, having been excited for it when I first saw the trailer for it. I remember hearing about it a few years prior and that Guillermo del Toro would be directing it, one of my 가장 좋아하는 directors who made Hellboy and Pan’s Labyrinth (Also Shape of Water isn’t on here. That is not a horror film). And while I did enjoy this film, I did not find it to be that scary. I don’t think any kids would find it scary personally. In the 일 and age where a kid can watch a drug cartel chainsaw beheading through 구글 images, I think children of the modern age are just 더 많이 difficult to scare, not to the fault of the movie, of course. What this movie does try, I must admit is disturbing and would scare smaller children. While there is no gore 또는 violent deaths, the first death of a kid being turned into a scarecrow is haunting to look at. And the monster designs are what I expect from del Toro. Some of the monsters are just haunting, from the smiling woman to the creature that can barely keep his body together. It’s some haunting visuals, even if the CGI doesn’t complement it that much. But hey, this film is a great addition for the 책 that they were inspired from. I never read 구스범스 because they just looked silly to me, but looking at Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark really pulled me in with it’s disturbing art and I loved it growing up. And I think if 당신 have a kid that 당신 just want to scare the piss out of for laughs, then this film might do it. Assuming your kid is very, very small and has no means of using Google.
9: Don’t Breathe
Man, back when I started this entire series, one of the biggest 영화 I was the most obsessed with was this one, Don’t Breathe. Seeing the trailers and thinking where it could possibly do with its concept of a blind man chasing down intruders in his own home, I was hooked, and I was so happy to not be disappointed. The film adds this claustrophobic feeling to it all with the Blind Man just being inches away from the characters and only barely missing them because he can’t see them, his hunting and survival skills mixed with their desire to escape adds so much suspense for first time viewers. All they have as an advantage is that he’s blind, but that’s not compared to him knowing the homes layout, being able to hear and tell when things are out of the ordinary 의해 feeling them, having a gun, locking all the doors and having a fucking attack dog waiting for them, it’s kind of the opposite of The Strangers and, I’m just gonna say it, way 더 많이 interesting to me. Rather than the 집 invaders being the threat, the threat is the homeowner trying to kill these intruders and 당신 are just left with suspense and curiosity, and not once does the film ever get boring for me. A bit silly at times, but never dull. I’m glad that I was able to get back into horror films with this film and it’s good that they have been in a pretty decent rise since, even with all the meandering crap that comes with it.
8: Brightburn
Okay, this film is not smart and it’s not thought provoking and it’s no different than say your Freddy Krugers and your Jason Vorhees. But I will say that the concept is creative enough and the premise is fun enough for me to have given it a try. A film all about a killer with super powers, a movie telling you, “What is 슈퍼맨 was interesting, and also a psychotic killer”, and I think it was a neat premise. In a modern world where superheroes are 더 많이 인기 than ever before thanks to The Avengers destroying the box office, stuff like this always interests me. And speaking of Marvel, this was worked on 의해 James Gunn, who also worked on Guardians of the Galaxy before 디즈니 shitcanned him on Twitter. The film is not the most interesting, and I would say it’s probably the least scariest film on the list, but it 더 많이 than makes up for it 의해 being a neat premise, having some pretty violent imagery for any slasher movie fan, and just being a fun premise to watch. It’s nothing 더 많이 than a fun romp 당신 can watch with 프렌즈 and have a good old time with. And I will say, with the film being successful enough, there is talk of a Brightburn universe in the works, and I’d 사랑 to see what other slasher superheroes there are in the world. It may not be scary, but it would appeal to my R Rated Hero film desires.
7: It (2017)
Okay, now while I think this film is pretty overrated and think it’s gotten way 더 많이 attention that it deserves, I won’t deny the joy that it got from me. I loved the original It and I 사랑 Tim Curry’s performance. That man is a blessing in all the wrong ways and I 사랑 him. But I will say, the Pennywise of the 2017 film is actually intimidating, for the most part. He manages to manipulate and traumatize the kids in this town and he manages to get stuff down without holding back. If 당신 see a kid die, they don’t imply it. They show that kid die. He gets destroyed. And while I’m not saying I approve of a film showing dead kids, I admire the dedication of the scene. I will also say that the kid actors did a great job, which is hard to find in a horror film. They really pulled off being in the worst situation possible. And the imagery in this film can be pretty intense, even if it has all the Stephen King tropes that I just roll my eyes at like all adults are shitty people. But the film was still entertaining enough for me to recommend to people, all three of the people in the world that haven't seen this film already. And I will also say It: Part 2 sucks and I hate it. I refuse to apologize for this opinion.
6: Get Out
당신 know what I 사랑 from a horror movie? When it can trick 당신 with a trailer and just flat out lie to you. I tend to avoid trailers nowadays because Hollywood sucks at making trailers and just shows off the entire movie, but Get Out really outdid what a trailer should be. Instead of showing 당신 everything, it just flat out lied to 당신 and let the audience assume that this film is about a racist family that is out to kill this poor black man, despite the fact that that couldn’t be further from the truth. Before watching Get Out, I had never heard of the term “Social Thriller” before in my life and I thought it was a very goran worthy term until I saw this film. This film has a lot of slow build up to it’s horror discussing the far too lenient 사랑 that some white people have for black people. Like it’s cool to like them, but there comes a point where it’s a bit much, and I was kind of shocked that this was the path the film was going down, and it made me 사랑 and respect the film a whole lot more. And I will say that horror and comedy manage to blend well together. This is a film 의해 Jordan Peele, who is known for his comedy, so it makes sense. And let me tell you, it works a whole lot better than whatever Us was going for. I do think that this is, while not the scariest film, is one of the better made films and I think that everyone should give it a watch. Even if 당신 aren’t a big horror fan, this is a great film for anyone to watch
5: The Witch
It’s two V’s like VVitch. Alright, that jokes out of the way, let’s talk about how this film does old time horror so well. I’m always very interested in horror films being set in the past. 당신 don’t get a whole lot of those, so it’s a nice touch . 당신 may get some stuff like, say, Bone Tomahawk and maybe Witchfinder General, and the classic Dracula and Frankenstein, but that’s about it. And 당신 certainly don’t get films set in old century England with a family being terrorized 의해 a gaggle of witches, an angry black goat and the fear of God. Like most English at the time. I’ve heard rumors that this film was to discuss the kind of fear people would live under if they were disgraced 의해 god, and that’s not out of the realm of possibility. This director has a habit of having films that are under the topic of a ton of discussions, and another film which we will get to later on this list. But The Witch is a slow burn with a lot of haunting imagery and just a depressive atmosphere that will take some time before it really gets to the meat and potatoes of the horror, but when it does, it is… hoo boy, is it not a fun time for the family. A lot of horror films these days really like putting families in the shittiest of situations, and I am perfectly fine with that because we get films like this.
4: Hereditary
Never have I watched a film that was just so grim and so hellbent on making 당신 feel miserable throughout the entire film. Not in a bad way like some shlock shock films like Human 지네, 지 네 또는 something, but through clever 글쓰기 and good acting. Hereditary is a film that I would recommend to any horror enthusiast, assuming that 당신 have something to lighten your mood after. I wouldn’t say Hereditary is an extremely scary film, but it is a very depressing film with the horror sitting just slowly 의해 at times. This film will shock 당신 in the best ways (Or the worst ways, depending on how 당신 look at it) and it will take 당신 to some dark places that only horror has the guts to discuss that no other medium can do properly. I kind of want to talk about this film the least because I want everyone to go into it as blind as possible just like I did, and you’ll be better off for it. I will say, there is some scene at the end that would make some 질문 what they were doing, but that doesn’t change the tone of the film leading up to it which is still great. Also, I am of course putting this in instead of Midsommer because Midsommer is not a scary film. I didn’t hate it, but it is not a horror film. Argue with me all 당신 want, but I found it funnier than anything else.
3: Climax
Let me ask 당신 this. You’re in a building with a bunch of people 당신 know, be it classmates 또는 co-workers, and you're stuck for the night. Some of them 당신 can tolerate, others 당신 have a fondness for, and others 당신 can’t stand for either they get under your skin 또는 because 당신 know they are trash talking 당신 right behind your back. And say someone has now drugged all of 당신 and 당신 have little to no control over yourself. 당신 could go and collect yourself and find the party responsible, 또는 당신 could just go and fight the piece of shit 당신 hate 또는 go and fuck the person 당신 want to fuck. Would 당신 be in control in this scenario? Well that’s what I get from watching Climax. A dark descent into the human mind and showing just what happens when humans are at their most primal but with the blend of hard 색깔 and dance 음악 의해 musicians such as Aphex Twin, Daft Punk and more. This film is far from being the most scary from a monster perspective 또는 some other entity, but it’s scary because of how human it is, and in the worst way possible. The half of the film is discussing character relationships and their desires and what drives them to rage, and then it’s them letting out those said desires and rage. The director has always had a way of 글쓰기 the worst of humanity but in a 더 많이 creative and real way rather than “Humans suck and 당신 should feel bad because I watch Elfen Lied” kind of thing. This is the guy who made a film that started with a ten 분 rape scene, so…. Yeah. This is, I will say, his best film, so if 당신 want to know what kind of madman this guy is, Climax is a good place to start.
2: Split
M. Night Shyamalan, known as the guy who made a few films in the 80s, ruined 아바타 and was a mockery in Hollywood for a long time before having sort of a revival. And let me say, after watching Split, he 더 많이 than deserved that comeback. His first modern horror film was The Visit which I thought was… eh. I didn’t really care for it much. But 스플릿, 분할 was something else. And being the tamest horror film on this list aside from Scary Stories, being a PG-13 horror film. And kind of shocking when dealing with the issues of mental illness and sexual abuse in ways that are 더 많이 mature than some R rated films are. The film has actor James McAvoy playing a single man with over twenty three different personalities having kidnapped three teenage girls. Some of his personalities are kinder than others, but throughout the film, 당신 are told of a mysterious twenty-fourth personality that is set to emerge from his psyche only called “The Beast”. And throughout the film, 당신 are just left asking, “What the hell is The Beast”, and once it finally does show up, it is a sight to behold. It’s amazing what an actor can do to make a villain so intimidating in these kinds of movies. Much like Anthony Hopkins in Silence of the Lambs, James McAvoy was able to pull off this villain perfectly. Kind of a shame Glass had to go and fuck it all up again.
1: The Lighthouse
Now this list was in no particular order. I was just going at 랜덤 with most of it. But if I had to choose any film on here to be my favorite, any at all, it would have to be The Lighthouse. From the director of The Witch, the Lighthouse is… honestly not all that scary of a film. But what it does do is it makes 당신 uncomfortable. 당신 are uncomfortable with Robert Pattinson and Willem DeFoe’s characters argue and only find joy when they are drunk off their rockers and lacking any food. 당신 are uncomfortable when 당신 see Robert’s character beat a seagull to death for no reason other than annoyed. 당신 are really uncomfortable when 당신 just see him masturbating to 이미지 of 인어 for the fun of it. And all 당신 can think of is what the hell is in that fucking lighthouse. That’s all the film tells 당신 about, and yet 당신 learn nothing from it. This film gives 당신 질문 with no 답변 and all it does is make 당신 see two weirdos either masturbate, take their clothes off, jump around drunk, have some mildly gay undertones, and have discussions about dead co-workers, lying about their lives, all culminating in a violent fight between the two as they are on the brink of madness from being trapped on an island for weeks. I doubt 당신 will be scared, hell I barely was, but 당신 will know what makes a perfect horror film. And hey, it was 더 많이 interesting than Midsommer.
Well, that’s a list alright. Will I keep a decent routine and make 더 많이 CoH articles? …………… maybe. I am still passionate about horror, but adult life is kind of a pain in the ass, and with not making money off these 기사 like some big wig hot shit Polygon journalist, I can only make so much of these. But I will say that I have no intention of leaving it to die just yet, so…. Take from that what 당신 will.
