Ramos: Third highest-scoring defender in Madrid history

On April 18 against Málaga, Sergio Ramos scored his 55

goal in the shirt of Real Madrid. It made the centre-back the third highest-scoring defender in the history of the club. The only two ahead of him are Fernando Hierro, with 127 goals, and Roberto Carlos, who scored 68. Ramos needs 13 more goals to catch the Brazilian. The Sevilla-born centre-back has an average of 5.5 goals per season and if he keeps up that scoring rate he will move up to second in the 2017/18 season.

The captain’s knack of scoring is significant not only in quantity but also in importance. Without doubt, the goal that is remembered the most is his 93

-minute strike at the end of the Champions League final against Atlético Madrid in Lisbon. The goal made him the hero of La Décima. His brace against Bayern Munich at the semi-final stage will also be remembered, as well his two goals at the Club World Cup and his strike in the come-from-behind 3-2 win over Huelva which allowed Madrid to go on and win the league title in the 2006/07 season.

Most of his goals have come through headers but he has scored through all manner of methods, including a direct free-kick against Real Valladolid two seasons ago.
