”THE WINDS OF WAR” (1983) Review

Some forty-five years ago, author Herman Wouk wrote ”The Winds of War”, a bestselling novel about the experiences of a middle-aged U.S. Navy officer and his family during the early years of World War II. A decade later, ABC 텔레비전 and producer David Wolper brought his story to the 텔레비전 screen with a seven-part, fourteen-and-a-half 시간 miniseries that became a ratings hit and a major Emmy and Golden Globe nominee.

Produced 의해 Dan Curtis and Barbara Steele, and directed 의해 Curtis; ”THE WINDS OF WAR” was a sprawling saga that told the story...

"THE LEGEND OF BAGGER VANCE" (2000) Review

I never saw "THE LEGEND OF BAGGER VANCE" in the movie theaters when it was first released years ago. I have a low tolerance of sports 영화 and there are only a few that I consider favorites of mine. Another reason why I never saw this film in the theaters is that my family simply had no desire to see it.

Based upon Steven Pressfield's 1995 novel and directed 의해 Robert Redford, "THE LEGEND OF BAGGER VANCE" was a box office flop. Worse, it had received mixed to negative reviews. Among the criticisms directed at the film was the accusation that the Bagger...

"ATONEMENT" (2007) Review

Based upon Ian McEwan’s 2001 novel, "ATONEMENT" told the story about how the lies and misunderstandings of 13-year-old girl from a nouveau-riche English family affected the romance between her older sister and the son of the family’s housekeeper. The movie starred James McAvoy, Keira Knightely and Academy Award nominee Saoirse Ronan.

Comprised in four parts (like the novel), "ATONEMENT" began with the 13 year-old Briony Tallis (Saoirse Ronan), an aspiring novelist with a crush on Robbie Turner (James McAvoy), the son of the family’s housekeeper. Robbie, along with...

It seems that Leo Tolstoy’s War & Peace («Война и миръ», Voyna i mir) novel is like the holy grail of every director who respects himself. It has been adapted for film, TV, opera, radio. 인터넷무비 데이타베이스 list 9 War and Peace adaptations including 2 silent films. The novel was first published in 1869. The work is epic in scale and is regarded as one of the most important works of the world literature. It is considered Tolstoy’s finest literary achievement, along with his other major prose work Anna Karenina (1873–1877).

"INFAMOUS" (2006) Review

I have heard a lot about the two movie biographies based upon Truman Capote’s experiences, while working on his famous 1966 non-fiction novel, "In Cold Blood" – 2005's "CAPOTE" and "INFAMOUS", which hit movie theaters in the following year. But this review is about the 초 film . . . namely "INFAMOUS". Written and directed 의해 Douglas McGrath, the movie starred Toby Jones as Truman Capote.

To be honest, I did not know what to expect of "INFAMOUS". Since it was the 초 Capote movie to be released, it failed to garner any prestigious critic awards 또는 nominations...

"RACE TO FREEDOM: THE UNDERGROUND RAILROAD" (1994) Review

Many 텔레비전 viewers and moviegoers might be surprised to learn that Hollywood had aired a good number of 텔레비전 영화 that featured the topic of U.S. slavery. One of those 영화 proved to be an offshoot of the 1977 miniseries, "ROOTS". However, another was the 1994 텔레비전 movie called "RACE TO FREEDOM: THE UNDERGROUND RAILROAD".

The 1994 텔레비전 movie is a story about the Underground Railroad, a loose network of secret routes and 안전한, 안전 houses occasionally used 의해 willing 19th-century slaves in the United States to escape...

"THE BLUE AND THE GRAY" (1982) Review

In 1982, CBS 텔레비전 aired a three-part miniseries about the experiences of two families during the Civil War. Sounds familiar? It should, for John Jakes had wrote something similar in three novels between 1982 and 1987 – namely the "NORTH AND SOUTH" Trilogy. Jakes’ novels were adapted for 텔레비전 in 1985, 1986 and 1994. However this miniseries was produced 의해 Larry White and Lou Reda. And despite the mildly similar theme to the "NORTH AND SOUTH" saga, there are some vast differences.

"THE BLUE AND THE GRAY" had not been based upon any particular...

"THE SHADOW RIDERS" (1982) Review

When I first set out to discover how many of author Louis L'Amour novels had been adapted for the 영화 and television, I had assumed at least a handful had gone through this process. I was surprised to discover that many of his works had been adapted. And one of them turned out to be the 1982 텔레비전 movie, "THE SHADOW RIDERS".

I have only seen two L'Amour adaptations in my life - "THE SHADOW RIDERS" and the 1979 two-part miniseries, "THE SACKETTS". Both productions seemed to have a great deal in common. The two productions are adaptations of L'Amour (which...

Below is a review of "THE BLACK DAHLIA", the 2006 adaptation of James Ellroy's 1987 novel:

"THE BLACK DAHLIA" (2006) Review

Judging from the reactions among moviegoers, it seemed quite obvious that director Brian DePalma’s adaptation of James Ellroy’s 1987 novel had disappointed them. The ironic thing is that I do not share their feelings.

A good number of people – including a relative of mine – have told me that they had expected "THE BLACK DAHLIA" to be a docudrama of the infamous 1947 murder case. Others had expected the movie to be an epic-style crime drama similar to the 1997 Academy...

"MIDDLEMARCH" (1994) Review

Many years have passed since I first saw "MIDDLEMARCH", the 1994 BBC adaptation of George Eliot's 1871 novel. Many years. I recalled enjoying it . . . somewhat. But it had failed to leave any kind of impression upon me. Let me revise that. At least two performances left an impression upon me. But after watching the miniseries for the 초 time, after so many years, I now realize I should have paid closer attention to the production.

Directed 의해 Anthony Page and adapted for 텔레비전 의해 Andrew Davies, "MIDDLEMARCH" told the story about a fictitious Midlands town...

"THE COUNT OF MONTE CRISTO" (1934) Review

I have seen only two versions of Alexandre Dumas père's 1845 novel, "The Count of Monte Cristo" in my past - the 1975 텔레비전 version with Richard Chamberlain and the 2002 디즈니 film with James Cavielzel. While 읽기 a good number of 기사 about the movie versions of the novel, I came across numerous praises for the 1934 adaptation that starred Robert Donat. And since I happened to like Dumas' story so much, I decided to see how much I would like this older version.

Set between the last months of the Napoleonic Wars and the 1830s, "THE COUNT...

"A NIGHT TO REMEMBER" (1958) Review

There have been many versions about the April 1912 sinking of the R.M.S. Titanic. Many versions. And I have personally seen at least five of them. One of them happened to be the 1958 movie, "A NIGHT TO REMEMBER".

Directed 의해 Roy Ward Baker, "A NIGHT TO REMEMBER" is based upon historian Walter Lord's 1955 book about the historical sinking. Since the 1958 movie was based upon a historical book instead of a novel, Baker, producer William MacQuitty and screenwriter Eric Ambler approached the film's plot in a semi-documentary style. Even the movie's leading character...

"THE BARCHESTER CHRONICLES" (1982) Review

Back in 1982, the BBC turned to 19th century author Anthony Trollope for a seven-part miniseries called ”THE BARCHESTER CHRONICLES”. The miniseries was based upon the author’s first two Barchester novels about the Church of England.

Directed 의해 David Giles and written 의해 Alan Plater, ”THE BARCHESTER CHRONICLES” is an adaptation of ”The Warden” (1855) and ”Barchester Towers” (1857). The novels focused upon the the dealings and social maneuverings of the clergy and gentry literature concern the dealings of the clergy and the gentry that...

"THE FOUR FEATHERS" (1939) Review

There have been seven versions of A.E.W. Mason’s 1902 novel, "The Four Feathers". At least three of them were silent films. In 1939, British producer Alexander Korda released the first sound adaptation of the novel. This version was also the first one to be filmed in color. Directed 의해 Korda’s brother, Zoltan Korda, "THE FOUR FEATHERS" starred John Clements, June Duprez, Ralph Richardson and C. Aubrey Smith.

Not only was this version of ”THE FOUR FEATHERS” the first to feature both sound and color, it is regarded 의해 many as the best adaptation of Mason’s...

"THE JOURNEY OF AUGUST KING" (1995) Review

When the 1995 adaptation of John Ehle's 1971 novel, "The Journey of August King" hit the theaters, it barely made a flicker in the consciousness of moviegoers. In a way, I could see why.

"THE JOURNEY OF AUGUST KING" begins with widowed farmer August King traveling through the hills of western North Carolina in the spring of 1815, after selling his produce, making a final payment on his land, and purchasing goods at the local markets. During his journey, he learns about a hunt for an escaped slave. August eventually comes across the slave - a 17 year-old...

Below is my review of the 1979 텔레비전 miniseries called ”THE SACKETTS”:

”THE SACKETTS” (1979) Review

Thirty years ago, CBS aired a two-part miniseries (or 텔레비전 movie) based upon two novels written 의해 the late Louis L’Amour. Directed 의해 Robert Totten, ”THE SACKETTS” starred Sam Elliot, Tom Selleck and Jeff Osterhage as the three Sackett brothers.

”THE SACKETTS” told the story of Tell (Elliot), Orrin (Selleck) and Tyrel (Osterhage) Sackett and their efforts to make new lives for themselves in the post-Civil War West. Screenwriter Jim Byrnes took two novels about the...

RELEASE OF OLD BBC PRODUCTIONS

Since the release of the 1975 miniseries "NORTH AND SOUTH" in 2013, I have found myself wondering about other BBC productions from the 1960s and 1970s.

I recently discovered that the 1996 miniseries, "THE TENANT OF WILDFELL HALL" was the 초 adaptation of Anne Brontë's novel. The first was a 1968 miniseries that starred Janet Munro, Bryan Marshall and Corin Redgrave. I also discovered that the 1999 miniseries, "WIVES AND DAUGHTERS", was not the first adaptation of Elizabeth Gaskell's novel. The BBC aired an earlier adaptation in 1971 that starred Zhivila Roche.

Does anyone know how to contact the BBC? I would like them to consider releasing these two productions in the near future.

"ESCAPE FROM FORT BRAVO" (1953) Review

Years ago, I used to watch a great deal of old 영화 on late night television. My two 가장 좋아하는 channels that offered these 영화 were Turner Network 텔레비전 (TNT) and the American 영화 Classic (AMC), which used to air 영화 without any commercial breaks. On TNT, I had stumbled across a Western movie originally released 의해 MGM Studios in 1953 called "ESCAPE FROM FORT BRAVO" (1953) and fell in 사랑 with it. After watching my recently purchased DVD copy of the movie, I could see why it became a 가장 좋아하는 of mine.

"THE MANIONS OF AMERICA" (1981) Review

Back in early 1981, ABC 텔레비전 aired a miniseries about the lives of an Anglo-Irish immigrant family called "THE MANIONS OF AMERICA". Starring Pierce Brosnan and Kate Mulgrew, the miniseries aired in three parts and was marketed as the Irish-American version of the 1977 miniseries, "ROOTS".

"The Irish-American version of "ROOTS"? Hmmmm . . . I do not know if that similarity genuinely works. Yes, both miniseries focused upon the beginning of a family line in the United States. Both are family sagas set before the 20th century. But the differences between...
