How is Mako 인어 a Spin Off Series to H20 just add water?

Okay so how is mako 인어 a spin off series to h20 just add water Iam very confused I get that it has to do with 인어 and takes place at mako island but mako 인어 does not even have the same characters. Can someone please help here.
