Disney Princess-Inspired Outfits Based on the Year Their Movie Premiered

Whether their stories are set in the 14th century or the 1920’s Jazz era, every Disney Princess’ style reflects their story’s setting and their personality. As we’ve seen time and time again, a Disney Princess’ fashion can translate to nearly any era of fashion, inspiring looks for Dapper Day or even what you’re wearing today.

To kick off #DisneyThrowback week, we thought we would take the stylings of these royal ladies to a new time period, the year that their movies first premiered. It was a fashion challenge, but again, the Disney Princesses proved to us that no matter the era, their outfits never go out of style.

Can you believe it\'s been 78 years since Snow White first premiered at the Carthay Circle Theatre? This look is more casual than red carpet ready, but still has elements of late \'30s style, like the collared dress from ModCloth and oxford heels from Frye.

When we think of style in the \'50s, we always picture ladies in those a-line dresses with petticoats underneath. Cinderella\'s love of a ball gowns is a natural fit for this style, and with t-strap heels and classic pearl earrings, she\'s ready to go to the prom or ball.

Roses for Briar Rose, get it? We went with pink instead of blue for a retro 1959 outfit for Aurora. The heel from ModCloth is functional and pretty, perfect for a princess who likes to gallivant through the woods. Instead of a prim purse, we chose a basket bag reminiscent of what Aurora carries when she picks berries. Since Aurora has one of the most iconic tiaras, we found a tri-pointed tiara/headband to finish off the look.

Oh 1989, so much color, so many leggings. We probably wore an outfit just like this to the theater when we saw The Little Mermaid as tiny tots. We paired a slouchy pastel purple sweater with teal leggings and high-top Converse. The shell-shaped purse from ASOS is adorable and we\'d carry it now even though it\'s not 1989.

Overalls might be making a comeback now, but they were first big on the scene in the early \'90s when Beauty and the Beast premiered. A white tee layered under anything was pretty much "the" look, and mary jane shoes were all the rage.

Jasmine is known for her harem pants, so to give her a 1992 spin, we chose baggy acid washed "mom jeans." To keep the look too heavy, we chose a teal crop top and teal jelly sandals, a staple shoe choice from that year. 1992 was also all about mini backpacks, and we loved this one from Target. Finally, Jasmine always has the best gold accessories. We went with heart earrings, tons of bangles, a gold daisy choker and retro gold watch.

It\'s pretty obvious that we just really wanted to create an earthy outfit around these cream Dr. Martens boots. Instead of going with the usual leather and fringe, we recreated Pocahontas\'s silhouette with a tiered floral print skirt and tan crop top. We included her signature turquoise with a very 1995 set of beaded bracelets. As a nod to her dress, we chose this mini backpack from Topshop. Finally, instead of her usual turquoise necklace, we picked this classic plastic rainbow choker that you might say contains all the colors of the wind.

Mulan spends most of the film dressed as a boy, so creating an outfit based on the year her movie premiered, 1998, was no easy task. Remembering what we wore in 5th grade, we chose capri pants and a flowy top that matches Mulan\'s dress near the end of the film. 1998 was the year of the butterfly clip, so we found a few that she could tuck into her bun, even if she is off saving the empire. Chunky black platforms finish off the look--not too tall though, since Mulan isn\'t exactly about sitting still.

Two of the biggest trends of 2009 were belted dresses and cardigans. We put the two of them together to make a outfit inspired by Tiana\'s diner ensemble in The Princess and the Frog.

It\'s tricky to make a throwback outfit from just a few years ago, but we tried to hearken back to our wardrobe five years ago when Tangled premiered. Remember brightly colored denim? We found the perfect shade of violet for a Rapunzel-themed outfit. We gave her a lose peasant blouse and booties, which came onto the scene in a big way in 2010 (thank goodness). Finally, no Tangled-based outfit is complete without a satchel!

It was only just a few years ago that we were wearing leather-like pants with slouchy beanies, an outfit combination we think Merida would approve of. A plaid flannel and lace up boots complete this look.
