(about rejecting the lead role for the "Footloose" remake)
I wanted a new challenge, and this was another musical. Not that I\'m done with musicals in any way. I just want to try different things.
Zac: I wouldn\'t call myself hot. I looked about 10 years old until the summer of my junior year [of high school]. I also used to go shopping at Goodwill. I would always come home with some ugly flannel that was too big for me, but I felt rebellious wearing it. My mom hated it. I look back now, and I think I just looked like an idiot.
I wore goofy hats to school and did musical theater. Most people thought I was a dork. But if you have a sense of humor about it, no one can bring you down.
Oh man, I don\'t know. It\'s all fun, and the hardest part is probably the most fun part, as well. It\'s the preparation...it\'s like high school, you know? You come together with your best group of friends, and then you end it. It\'s like a really good summer camp.
Zac: Great advice comes from people that have been around a lot longer than you.
(following rumours he would follow in Daniel Radcliffe\'s shoes and star in Broadway play \'Equus\')
Daniel was very ballsy. Oh wow, that is the wrong choice of word for that! He is very smart. But I don\'t know if I would do something edgy for the sake of doing something edgy. I think as I mature, so will my roles. I think it will come with time. I\'m not going to do anything drastic.
I grew up being into sports and I wasn\'t trained to move my body in the right way for dancing. I\'m the last one to get any moves correct. In rehearsals it\'s always, \'OK, one more take for Zac.\'
I assure you I showered this morning - minutes before I got here. And I do it every day. Sometimes twice. So, that\'s kind of funny. But my dad was kind of like razzing me for it. I can\'t help but laugh!
Zac: A fan sent me a letter and a $10 bill. It\'s a short letter--all she said was, "Hey, since it\'s harder for you to go out these days without getting photographed, here $10 for a pizza." I was like, "Aww, she sent me money for a pizza so I could eat at home!"
Zac: There\'s probably one instance I can think of when singing to a girl worked for me I\'ve tried. As for dancing, you can\'t really go up to a girl and bust into a cool dance move.
Zac: I\'m a guy, but I\'m not afraid to cry. Not all of the time. But when I\'m watching a movie, I\'ll sometimes shed a tear, especially Moulin Rouge.
Zac: I love where I\'m at with my fans. So when I look at projects (like Footloose and Seveteen), I try to take that audience and bring them on new and fun adventures.
Zac: I met a girl through the Ronald McDonald House charities in August . She was just very, very sweet. It was flattering because she knew all about HSM 2 before it came out, and she seemed genuinely excited. It makes me glad that everyone in HSM 2 is opening up an outlet for kids to explore music.
Zac: I don\'t know if I believe in love at first sight, but of course I believe in two people having chemistry right away. A girl should be really easy to talk to. When I lose track of time because we\'ve been talking, I think that\'s really fun.
Zac: One time I went into a restroom and a girl followed me in. I signed an autograph for her in the sink. It was pretty funny because she was in a guy\'s restroom and she wasn\'t embarrassed at all.
Zac: I think if you\'re fame-hungry, go out to a nightclub and get drunk...why do that? I don\'t understand how some people would want fame so bad that they\'d go out and get negative attention to earn it.
Zac: You always have to remember that bullies want to bring you down because you have something that they admire. Also, when you get made fun of-when people point out your weaknesses, it\'s an opportunity for you to rise above.
Zac: (On his song \'Ladies\' Choice\') The songwriters decided to give Link a cool, upbeat, Elvis-style number, and it\'s the perfect time for it in the movie. Ladie\'s Choice establishes the connection between Tracy and Link. And it\'s the kind of number you need in a sixties musical: the rock n\' roll band at the record hop, with bright colors and backup dancers.
Zac: It\'s been great. I grew up so far removed from this industry and so far away from L.A. I just fell in love with theater, and after being so focused on school my whole life and musical theater, specifically, being my creative outlet, I can\'t believe that it has turned into something more than that. I\'m grateful and thankful and amazed at how it\'s all turned out. I\'m still on the craziest ride of my life.
Zac: Musicals are very different from other films. And as an actor, when you\'re preparing for one, you train an entirely different skill set altogether. And as an audience member, I know the feeling I have when I leave a musical is unrivaled by any other type of film. I love watching things blow up, but it doesn\'t really excite me -- and I can\'t sing that on the way home. So, musicals are cool. They\'re unique, and I\'m glad that we\'re doing more of them.
Zac: (about whether he identifies with \'Hairspray\'s\' Link Larkin or \'High School Musical\'s\' Troy Bolton most) For different reasons, both. I\'d like to be more like Troy. I don\'t want to be shallow. I don\'t want to be a follower. So I just cop out and say Troy. Also, Link\'s way cooler than I am. What am I going to say? He\'s the stud. I\'m not like that.
Zac: (comparing TV movie making with a big-budget feature like \'Hairspray\') One of the major differences is the amount of time and liberties we had on Hairspray abound compared to High School Musical. They\'re really two different types of films altogether. The other one is about kids. This movie deals more with established characters and, also has such a talented, older cast. I felt like I had to give it 110 percent in every scene to keep up. Also, the training was a lot more intense, we had three months of rehearsals.
Zac: I wish I could say I see my little brother more. We used to fight all the time but now that I don\'t see him very often I cherish the time I have with him.
Zac: We shot High School Musical in eight weeks. I spent longer rehearsing for Hairspray than filming High School Musical.
Zac: Working out is my biggest hobby. It\'s my Zen hour. I just zone out.
Zac: Jesse (McCartney) is one of the nicest people around. I hate when I hear bad things about him, because anyone who knows him would agree that he\'s a good guy and really humble.
Zac: I\'ve been doing musical theater since I was a kid. And look for a CD from me in the future. I want to write all the songs!
Zac: I was influenced when I was younger by the cartoon movies that Disney put out, like Cinderella and what not. I watched those movies over and over when I was younger and the music is ingrained into my head. Nowadays, I\'m still humming the tunes. It taught me the fundamentals.
Zac: In sixth grade, my basketball team made it to the league championships. In double overtime, with three seconds left, I rebounded the ball and passed it - to the wrong team! They scored at the buzzer and we lost the game. To this day, I still have nightmares!
Zac: I\'m very competitive by nature. And I like to be the underdog - It\'s the best way to win. To come from behind and win is a great feeling!
Zac: Personally, I was never the cool kid. I was always sort of a bookworm. I would just like to be more like Troy, because he\'s so cool.
Zac: Amanda Bynes and I have become close since filming Hairsray. It\'s so weird because I grew up watching her.
Zac: (when asked about his on-screen chemistry with Vanessa Hudgens in HSM) At callbacks, it was a mix-and-match session. We were stuck together through the entire process. But at the time, we didn\'t know if it was chemistry or just they didn\'t like us or what was going on. I guess we noticed it from the beginning. I still don\'t know what it is...I think it\'s just...I don\'t know...she\'s fun.
Zac: (about living on his own) I wake up every morning and make myself breakfast. I do the dishes and the laundry, and clean up the place.
Zac: I usually spend Valentines Day with my friends. But if I did have a girlfriend, I\'d bring her flowers and candy.
Zac: I love the discussions online, They can pick out things in the movie that you\'d never dreamed people would find out. I don\'t go that often. I try not to because it can either give you a big head or tear you down.
