Deception and Disgrace

{Reopen on Pride Rock, with Yugi walking out onto the promontory.}

YUGI:
Okay-- I have to tell her today. Oh... where do I start? "Mana... Mai
had a plot-- and I was part of it. But I don't wanna be, because-- it's
because I love you. Oh, she'll never believe me. But I gotta
try.

{He goes into the cavern, where Mana and Atem are waking up.}

YUGI:
Mana... I need to talk to you.

ATEM:
Mana... I don't want you talking with him. I
want to talk with him.

{Mana's face brightens; Atem winks at her, and he and Yugi go out
onto the promontory and down onto the savannah. Scene switch to where
they are walking through the newly burnt section of the Pride Lands.}

ATEM:
Bakura couldn't let go of his hate... and in the end, it destroyed him.

YUGI:
I've... never heard the story of Bakura that way. He truly was a killer.

ATEM:
Fire is a killer. Sometimes, what's left behind can grow better than
the generation before...

{He puts his hand down to the ground and raises some dust; when he lifts it, a young
plant is there. The two lean down, head to head.}

ATEM:
...If given the chance.

{We hear an evil chuckle from the dust surrounding them. Yugi gasps as
he realizes what's happening. Many of Mai's servents appear from the
clouds of dust, surrounding them. The servents' eyes glow bright,
sinister .}

YUGI:
No... oh, no... no....

MAI:
Why, Atem...

ATEM:
Mai.

MAI:
What are you doing out here, and-- so alone? {the servents encircle
Atem and Yugi} Well done, Yugi... just like we always planned.

ATEM:
{turning on Yugi} You.

YUGI:
No! I didn't have anything to do with this!

MAI:
Attack!

YUGI:
No!

{The servents attack. Atem is fighting off several at once. Yugi
tries to help Atem, but is battered off by a servent and falls to the
side, hitting his head on a rock. Atem is thrown to the bottom of a
ravine;servents slide down the slope towards him.}

MAI:
Yes! We've got him!

{Rebecca and the other servents attack again, forcing Atem to flee
down the canyon.}

MAI:
Remember your training! As a unit!

{Atem is trapped; he tries to climb up the walls of the canyon, using
the piled-up logs to gain purchase; Yugi is above him on the ledge.}

YUGI:
Atem!

MAI:
Get him! Yugi! Get him! Do it now!

{Ryou jumps from the crowd}

RYOU:
I'll do it-- for you, Mother! {he bounds up the logs, laughing} Mother-
- are you watching? {softly, to himself} I'm doing it for you... and
I'm doing it for me!

{Ryou chases Atem up a slope with several broken logs strewn across
it. Just as Atem reaches the top, Ryou grabs his ankle.}

RYOU:
This is my moment of glory!

{The log on which Ryou is standing on breaks, causing Ryou to lose
his grip on Atem's ankle and begin to fall. Atem reaches the top, but
the pile of logs rolls down the slope with Ryou among them; they all
land in a heap at the bottom of the ravine. Ryou lies trapped under a
large log. He looks up to the top of the slope to see one final log
rapidly falling in his direction. He grimaces, terrified, as the log
hits him. Yugi rushes down to help free Ryou, but he is swatted aside
by Mai, who pulls enough logs aside to see Ryou's face.}

MAI:
Ryou...

RYOU:
{gasping for air and coughing} I'm sorry, Mother... I tried...

MAI:
Ssshh.

RYOU:
Well... I finally got your attention, didn't I...

{Mai smiles tenderly at him and cradles his face in her hand.}

RYOU:
Didn't I...

{Ryou dies. Rebecca appears next to Mai on the edge of the logs.}

REBECCA:
Ryou....

{Scene switch to the middle of the Pride Lands, where Atem is walking
wearily back to Pride Rock. Mana sees him from a distance off.}

MANA:
Father... Father! Mahando, get help!

MAHANDO:
{running off} Oh yes! Help... at once! Of course!

{Atem is walking with great pain. Mana, Joey, and Tristan reach him.}

MANA:
Father...?

JOEY:
Atem! Talk to me! What happened?

ATEM:
{Atem coughs, wheezing, having a hard time speaking} Yugi... {a
painful breath of air} Ambush...

{Atem collapses, groaning in pain.}

MANA:
No...

{Joey grabs Atem's arm and hugs it; Tristan hoists Atem on his back,
and they start to drag him back to Pride Rock.}

JOEY:
It's all right, buddy... we're here for you.

{Scene switches back to the Outlands, where the servents are gathered
in a memorial to Ryou.}

MAI:
Bakura... watch over my poor Ryou. {she turns on Yugi} You!

{Mai swats Yugi across the face scrathing him with her nails.}

YUGI:
Eeaugh!

{Yugi looks away in pain, but soon turns his head, glaring at Mai. She
recoils at the sight, shocked; Yugi now has a scar over his left eye
just like Bakura's. Mai recovers quickly.}

MAI:
What have you done?

YUGI:
I-I-I didn't mean to... it-it-it wasn't my fault, I... I
did nothing!

MAI:
Exactly! And in doing so, you betrayed your pride... betrayed Bakura!

YUGI:
I want nothing more to do with him!

MAI:
You cannot escape it! Ryou is dead because of you!

YUGI:
No.

MAI:
You've killed your own brother!

YUGI:
No!{Yugi turns and runs out from among the pride, many of whom are
growling and snarling at his departure.}

MAI:
Let him go. Atem has hurt me for the last time... now he's corrupted
Yugi! Listen to me... Atem is injured and weak. Now is the time to
attack! We will take his entire kingdom... by force!

{The Outsiders all snarl and cheer in reply. Scene switch back to Pride
Rock, where Atem is just waking up.}

MANA:
Daddy... it can't be true.

{Camera shifts down to the valley floor, where the villegers are all
gathered.}

BLACKSMITH:
It's Yugi. What's he doing here?

ROYAL FOOLS:
That's Yugi.

RANDOM VILLAGERS:
Look at that scar... I can't believe he's here. That's Yugi?

MANA:
Yugi!

{Atem snarls and jumps forward, cutting her off. Yugi approaches down
the narrow aisle between the congregated villagers.}

RANDOM VILLAGERS:
I never trusted him... It's the Outsider... it's that little
troublemaker...

JOEY:
Why I oughtta... let me at 'im! Let me at 'im! {to Tristan} Here; hold
me back.

TRISTAN:
Okay!

JOEY:
{held back by Tristan} Let me at 'im! Let me at 'im!

TRISTAN:
Okay! {he lets go of Joey}

JOEY:
{lurching forward; turning back to Tristan} I think you're missing the
basic point here.

TRISTAN:
Uh...

RANDOM VILLAGERS:
What's he doing here?... He doesn't belong here... Look at that scar on
his face... He looks just like Bakura...

ATEM:
Why have you come back?

YUGI:
Atem... I had nothing to do with--

ATEM:
You don't belong here.

YUGI:
Please... I ask your forgiveness.

MANA:
Daddy, please... listen to him!

ATEM:
{to Mana} Silence! {to Yugi} When you first came here, you asked for
judgment...

RANDOM VILLAGERS:
Give him what he deserves!

ATEM:
...And I pass it now.

RANDOM VILLAGERS:
Kick him out! That's right! Judgment day is here!

ATEM:
Exile!

MANA:
No!

RANDOM VILLAGERS:
Exile him! Exile! Exile!

MANA:
No! ...Yugi!

{Yugi is driven from Pride Rock at sperpoint.}

VILLAGERS:
Deception
Disgrace
Evil as plain as the scar on his face

CARETAKERS:
Deception (An outrage!)

VILLAGERS:
(He can't change his stripes!)

CARETAKERS:
Disgrace (For shame!)

VILLAGERS:
(You know these Outsider types!)

PRIST:
He asked for trouble the moment he came

VILLAGERS:
(See you later, agitator!)

BLACKSMITHS:
Deception (An outrage!)

VILLAGERS:
(Just leave us alone!)

ROYAL FOOLS:
Disgrace (For shame!)

VILLAGERS:
(Traitor, go back with your own!)

PRIST:
He asked for trouble the moment he came

VILLAGERS:
(See you later, agitator!)

VILLAGERS:
Born in grief
Raised in hate
Helpless to defy his fate
Let him run
Let him live
But do not forget
What we cannot forgive

And he is not one of us

{Yugi is hounded from the Pride Lands. As he runs, he sees his
reflection in a pool change to that of Bakura.}

Someone once lied to us
Now we're not so blind
For we knew he would do what he's done
And we know that he'll never be one of us

{He wanders into the desert; the overlaid images are of Mana weeping
and of Atem's face turning away. Seto watches Yugi leave, from a
distance.}
