“Of course we’re alone!” Chandler said, slightly irritable at Nathan’s sudden detachment. “It’s the middle of the freaking night!”
Nathan ignored the boy’s irritation, resuming his brisk manner. “They had to make sure.”
Lily crossed her arms. “They? So there’s more. It’s not just 당신 two, is it?”
Nix nodded, smiling slightly. “No, it’s not just us.” She turned away from the children, calling over her shoulder to someone they couldn’t see.
“It’s safe!”
The three children looked at each other, perplexed, but they didn’t have long to wonder, because at that moment, a flood of people came swarming through their front door. Helena began another round of barking at the onslaught of newcomers, and Lily quickly grabbed onto her 칼라 and dragged her over to the living room, the other children following.
As they sat down on the couch, they were greeted with many familiar faces. They saw AngelWings, who their parents sometimes called SilverWings 의해 mistake, and Mercy, the redhead whose silliness never ceased to make them laugh. There was Harley, who they knew must be extremely important, since she had somehow been raised 의해 both 슈퍼맨 and Batman, and therefore treated with the utmost respect; and Shadow, who Annabelle liked, since she also had no superpowers, but managed to still kick butt in battle. Scarlet, the other firecaster, and the cat-girl Korran were there too, as was Phoebe and her husband Dylan. They even spotted Adrian and Belle, although their daughter Andy, who the kids liked very much, was nowhere in sight. Lily was excited to see so many friends, but she realized that as the oldest member of the household currently, she must act as hostess. Smiling, she led them into the living room, where they all piled on the couch, chairs, and floor.
The room was a babble of talk. Annabelle was laying on the couch, screaming with laughter as Mercy tickled her feet and legs, Lily was wandering around, greeting all of her parents’ Justice League friends, and Chandler was sitting in the corner with Nathan, away from all the noise. It almost felt like a party, and everyone seemed to have forgotten their urgency from earlier. That is, until Lily made a sudden realization.
“Where are Mom and Dad?”
The room fell completely silent. Everyone looked around, giving each other meaningful, pain-filled glances, and Lily, embarrassed, shrank back into her seat, turning invisible in order to avoid the looks.
“We should tell them,” Nix whispered to AngelWings, who nodded, and the two stood up, as did Mercy, Phoebe, and a few others, and they walked over in the direction of the bedroom. Lily was puzzled, and since she was still invisible, silently followed. She saw them go into the bedroom and close the door behind them, and even with her superspeed Lily wasn’t fast enough to slip inside, so she stood with her ear pressed against the door.
She heard the bedsprings creak--they must have sat down--and soon, muffled voices came to her.
“We have to tell them at some point,” said a voice that she recognized as AngelWings.
“We can’t,” Nix replied. “You don’t know what that’ll do to them. Believe me, I know. After my parents----” her voice was muffled 의해 a loud rustling, Lily cursed silently. “I was...broken.”
“They’ve been wondering,” Phoebe piped up. “You can’t go without telling them.”
“I can’t believe the nerve of that b---” the voice was muffled again. They were getting fainter. Lily had to strain to make out the words. “Traitor---how could s----the kids are gonna be----”
“We have to tell them.” This was louder now. “They need to know.”
Murmurs of assent, and then footsteps, getting closer to the door. Lily scurried off, and lifted her invisibility when she reached the couch, as if nothing had happened. The group from the bedroom stood at the doorway of the living room, and everyone fell silent again. The mood was serious once more. Nix cleared her throat.
“Kids. You’re probably wondering why we’re here.”
The three children nodded; Annabelle opened her mouth to speak, but Lily quickly shushed her. She had a bad feeling where this was going.
“And probably even more, why we’re all here and your parents aren’t.”
They nodded again. A sick feeling had started in Lily’s stomach, spreading up to her throat. Her 심장 was pounding, it sensed something was wrong.
Nix bent down, looking each child in the eye. Lily was the only one who met her gaze, her eyes were filled with a deep sadness, and something else that Lily couldn’t understand, yet terrified her.
“The mission that your parents left on, we were all there. We had no idea what we were going to face, but what happened there, what happened to your parents, was something we will never forget. I think you’ve figured it out 의해 now. I-I’m sorry, kids.”
Annabelle sat, speechless, unable to believe her ears. Yes, she had certainly figured it out, and 의해 the looks on her siblings’ faces, they had too. The tears were falling before she could stop them, and rage was bubbling up inside of her. Nix noticed, and reached out to her. She pulled away, screaming.
“It’ll be okay,” Nix said softly, pulling her closer. “Relax, Annabelle, there’s nothing we can do. It’ll be okay.”
Annabelle screamed again, dropping to the floor, panic-stricken. “It’s not going to be okay! Of course it isn’t! My parents are DEAD!”
Nathan ignored the boy’s irritation, resuming his brisk manner. “They had to make sure.”
Lily crossed her arms. “They? So there’s more. It’s not just 당신 two, is it?”
