So, In-Indie, the first part of it being done. Gotta say, despite having little to no time for big triple A games, it’s a lot of fun to check out all these indie titles and see what they’re capable of. So, every time we finish ten reviews of an indie game, and are ready to start a new part of this whole thing, we will rank the games, talk about news if it is available to us, and then see what indie games are coming out and what to get excited for. So let us start ranking these games from best to worst
The Least Best
YIIK: A Postmodern RPG
Even if I could find stuff to like in this game, I can still say that this was the least polished game of the ten I played. While I liked it, putting all my credibility on the line, the story was only good at parts. The first two chapters were really bad with the writing, and the ending not the 2/3rds of the epilogue, the ending itself, felt bloated throughout. And the dialogue ranged from awkward to…. The race card. Ugh! But despite the lackluster writing, YIIK had interesting ideas, some worked, others didn’t, but thankfully, for me, they worked 더 많이 than they failed, and I was happy to see the game through to the end. Sure, the 글쓰기 was pretty sloppy, but it had some good moments, at least to me. But that being said, if the game just cut the dialogue 의해 like… a lot, and allowed time for the game to show rather than tell, use silent storytelling in some ways, it would be a 더 많이 interesting game. Hell, people would probably hate this game a lot less. And boy, do they hate it. That being said, I like parts of it. Do I hate intention of going back? Eh. Maybe one day. Honestly, it’s a little scary for me to praise this game, cause I look at how everyone has come to a unanimous decision of hating this game. And while it’s justified, I just want to like the parts that it does right. The developers can do some stuff. They just gotta be 더 많이 accepting, learn from their mistakes of the past, and maybe they can create a really good game. Also, that ending sucked. Sorry, but I have to say it
The 프렌즈 of Ringo Ishikawa
Okay, everything after this is really good in both 글쓰기 and gameplay, I swear, so we don’t need to worry about another YIIK situation, I hope…. So anyway, 프렌즈 of Ringo Ishikawa was a surprisingly fun time all around and I enjoyed going through every 초 of it. Even with all the vague locations, some repetitiveness and the glitches that were quite frequent and unlike anything I’ve seen for a game before. But hey, it’s on Switch and Steam, so if 당신 want to experience a really relaxing game, then this is the one for you.
Ruiner
While Ruiner was a fun game, it was definitely my least 가장 좋아하는 of the Devolver games I have played so far. Ruiner just has a lot of tedium that I can see scaring people off. Not me, however. It was a fun experience, if it could be considered very samey. But it was a fun beat em up with graphic violence and an amazing cyberpunk setting with amazing character designs. Check it out if 당신 think it’s interesting at all.
VA-11 HALL-A
Did 당신 know that VA-11 HALL-A is the best cyberpunk bartending game out there until I review Red Strings Club, and even then, I’ll still probably like VA-11 HALL-A more? Honestly, if the indie games I didn’t play for this series weren’t so damn incredible, VA-11 HALL-A would’ve probably dominated this month. But the competition is really stiff. As for VA-11 HALL-A itself, it’s an amazing visual novel experience with a ton of memorable characters and an interesting method of storytelling. Also Jill is just a great character and I just want her to not have to be so miserable. Seriously, check out VA-11 HALL-A. It’s an amazing game, and one that I even bought the soundtrack for. I don’t buy much soundtracks, but this one is a big exception.
Hotline Miami
And now we come to my 가장 좋아하는 of the devolver games I’ve played this month. An addictive, brutal, and difficult 상단, 맨 위로 down action game that just keeps going and going with no stops and I 사랑 every 초 of it. I beat this game in one whole sitting and not a moment was spent with regret. I can’t wait to see what Devolver does next, and I am also excited to try out Hotline Miami 2 some time in the future.
Furi
When I got this game, I was not expecting to fall in 사랑 with it as hard as I did, but god, after beating that six 시간 boss rush, I just wanted more. It was so fun and challenging and the visuals alone were incredible, despite the games limitations. Seriously, action game lovers, this is a game that 당신 will benefit having in your collection. It is the perfect blend of visual flare and an addictive and satisfying combat system
Shovel Knight
What?! Hun!? Shovel Knight isn’t the top? Yes. I 사랑 Shovel Knight, but I 사랑 the other games more. That being said, Shovel Knight is 8-bit goodness through and through with some of the best level 디자인 and boss battles in the indie market I have seen so far. There’s a reason why 닌텐도 fell for indie games, and Shovel Knight is one of those reasons. If 당신 want to experience the fun and joy of old NES games without the limitations of the past, Shovel Knight is the game for you.
Skullgirls: 2nd Encore
SKULLGIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIII-
Undertale
Yes, I like Undertale a lot. I get it, people hate it when 당신 chose the 인기 pick and they want 당신 to pick something obscure, but there’s a reason Undertale got popular. And I don’t mean with kids. It’s a great game, with an amazing story and a great cast of characters that 당신 meet throughout the game. Each one is memorable and every little detail in this game just puts a big smile on peoples faces. I’m excited to see where the development for Deltarune goes, and I can’t wait to cry all over again
Night in the Woods
I said it before and I have no problem saying it again. Night in the Woods is my 가장 좋아하는 indie game of all time. I don’t like to use the word relatable a lot, but man, does this game just know how to get to me. The small town, the characters, that great set of 음악 that 당신 hear that just feels so natural with the environment, the autumn leaves falling from the sky. It’s just a game that makes me feel relaxed and calm. The characters aren’t just one dimensional hipsters, they all have their likes and interests, they all have dreams, they all want to do something, even Mae, who feels like she’s going nowhere. It’s a game that does so much without feeling bloated and try hard (Ahem, YIIK, AHEM AHEM). Please, if 당신 want to play any of these indie games, let one of them be Night in the Woods. It is a game that has touched me, and it will touch 당신 too…. WAIT, NO-
What’s New in the Indie World
Crypt of the NecroDancer’s Crossover with Zelda
Crypt of the NecroDancer, a fun little indie dungeon crawler that is way too hard for a simpleton like myself is now doing a crossover with 닌텐도 to bring Cadence of Hyrule, where 당신 can play Zelda 음악 and have a chance to play as Link and Zelda. I’ve heard that a lot of people are excited about this, but the developer for Crypt of the NecroDancer is insanely nervous and not wanting to screw this up. I can see why. A big company like 닌텐도 comes to you, and the possible fate of big companies reaching out to indie developers is a lot on an indie developers shoulders. But I have faith in him. I may suck dick at Crypt of the NecroDancer, but maybe one 일 I’ll beat it so I can review it…. Maybe.
Lethal League Blaze Coming to Consoles (and in me, hopefully)
Lethal League started out as a flash game that 당신 could play for free on the internet before becoming an indie game on Steam. Now with a 3D sequel, the game hopes to come to consoles soon. For those wondering, the game is kind of like a fighting game, where 당신 play as characters knocking around a baseball to hit the opponent. The 3D style kinda reminds of the great cel-shading of Jet Set Radio…. Oh wait, I mean this is just the true Jet Set spiritual successor, especially since they got a track from Hideki Naganuma, who did the 음악 for Jet Set Radio. Seriously, listen to Ain’t Nothin’ Like a Funky Beat. It’s the most JSR shit in the world and I 사랑 it. I don’t know when the game will come to console, but I am waiting. Sure, it missed it’s spring deadline, but I’m sure it will come…… eventually. My 가장 좋아하는 character, 디자인 wise, is probably Candyman… don’t know why
Coming Attractions
No Straight Roads, developed 의해 Metronomik, follows a duo part of a rock band as they fight off the EDM’s empires all over the city. At least from what I’ve seen from the gameplay and bits of story. The 음악 is so damn fresh and bumping that it makes me want to get an OST of this game as soon as possible. The boss fights will take extra note of this music, as bosses seem to attack and flow with the music. Just that premise alone excites me to see what the game does next. I really 사랑 the character designs as well, from the crazy designs of the main characters to the insane boss 디자인 like DJ Subatomic Supernova. I look 앞으로 to getting this game on PS4 when it comes out.
#Blud, developed 의해 Exit 73, is something that I was not expecting to get excited for, but low and behold, here we are. #Blud follows a young girl who must protect her school and town from the hordes of demons that invade it. The animations in this game not only look familiar to me, like it gives me vibes of early Cartoon Network and 유튜브 animations, but it just makes everything have life to them. Everything moves so fluently and gives it so much character. It’s the kind of visual flare that I got from looking at indie titles like Cuphead and Skullgirls. Oh, and speaking about Skullgirls…
Indivisible, developed 의해 Lab Zero, is a game that really excites me. Already being from the creators of Skullgirls is a game that makes me interested, but the style of gameplay is something that the studio has never attempted before, so it makes me wonder what their take will be. A metroidvania RPG that allows 당신 to change your character into other characters. And they even got the 애니메이션 studio, Trigger, to animate parts of this game. Seriously, that makes me happy that this studio that I have been happy to try their games for since high school to really make it. My only regret is that I couldn’t have funded the Kickstarter. Oh well, I’ll just buy multiple copies of the game and maybe I’ll make up for my sins.
Well, like in my shopping 카트 for indie games, Devolver had to be in the coming attractions somewhere. Fall Guys looks like a fun little battle royale racing game that could be a fun party game. Get some 프렌즈 together and give it a try. Carrion is a concept I wish some other horror games would try. A survival horror game where 당신 are the monster. And I mean real horror games. Not pretentious indie games like Braid (I joke. Braid is really good). And My Friend Pedro, which is out now…. Damn.
Ori and the Will of the Wisp, developed 의해 Moon Studios, the sequel to the already visually impressive Ori and the Blind Forest, and yet here comes a sequel that manages to look even 더 많이 beautiful. I never played the first Ori game, but now I really want to give it a try. I’ve heard it’s pretty hard, but given that I’ve played Hotline Miami, Hollow Knight and Cuphead… Eh, I’ll be fine
Spirit Farer, developed 의해 Thunder Lotus Games, looks like a game that totally won’t depress me. Sure, it’s got furries in it, so I can joke about my non-existent fetish, shut up, Aquamarine. But in all seriousness, aside from looking like a story book, this is a game that I can tell is gonna be filled with all kinds of sadness. And hey, I played Night in the Woods and Undertale, so I’m mentally prepared to cry again.
Way to the Woods, developed 의해 one Anthony Tan, may seem like a walking simulator that can get really boring and turn some people away from the start, but honestly, I like it, simply for the post apocalyptic setting with no people. After NieR: Automata, I’ve grown fond of that kind of setting and really wanna see what this game does. Also, I’ve been told that the 음악 for this game is done 의해 the developer of Steven Universe. And hey, I like Undertale. If I can like one game with a shunned fandom, why not another.
And with that said, I think we got quite a list of indie games coming, and that excites me if we can be honest. I look 앞으로 to playing them and then reviewing them for your pleasure. And speaking of which, what game do we have next…. Well…
