bella has a special shield. shes uses it when they visit the volturi. its probaly one of the reason edward cant read her mind.

Bella has a mental shield that she can expand and contract to protect others standing near her. Her talent was growing even before she was a vampire, so it's very powerful. That's why Edward can't read her mind. Also the shield only protects against mental vampire powers, not physical.
