I agree with kaatie...he doesn't think he is good enough for her and he loves her enough to let her go. Elena hasn't discovered that she loves Damon too.

i think Elena also loves Damon,but he did so many things tht broke her heart,so she is staying away from Damon and doesnt realize her true feeling to him... :(

That part broke my heart...
I think he did it mainly because he truly loves her and he knows right now that she doesn't love him back and he doesn't see himself as good enough for her yet because of the things he has done to break her heart. (IE. snapping Jeremy's neck.)

I was like, "WTF?" when it happened. I totally want her to actually remember because I like the idea of Damon and Elena more than Stefan and Elena.

And she doesn't love him. Right now she likes him less than last season, all because of him trying to KILL her brother.

I was really sad a this scene. Saying that he doesn't deserve her prooves that he does because we all know that the real proof of love is the sacrifice.
Making her forget ? It was stupid from his part because if she really didn't love him she'd had say something like "Please Damon stop, I love Stefan" But she didn't! And did you guys saw her lips when he kissed her forehead ? If he tried to kiss her she would have kiss him back.
