How did the Captain really feel when Maria left?

In the movie, Maria leaves the Von Trapp 별장, 빌라 unexpectedly because of her feelings for the Captain. The children are completely miserable while Elsa seemed happy.
I really don't understand how the captain felt. I can't tell if he was as sad 또는 not.
He also doesn't seem to be affected 의해 her dissapperance. Can someone tell me exactly what he is thinking? How did he really feel? Sad (like the children) 또는 happy?

My take on it was that he was upset but in denial. He was trying to ignore that fact that she left, and just 옮기기 on. I am actually rewatching it today, and to me, when he is telling the children that Maria left a letter, it is like he is trying to act like it is no big deal, but he clearly does not want to talk about it, and even seems to be getting mad when the children keep asking questions. I think this is because he is upset.

Okay, that makes sense. I kept getting confused because I was wondering why he wasn't as melancoly as the children were.
