I think Klaus has a sadistic solution to abandonment issues.
He cares for his family, and if they try to leave him, then he'd dagger them to keep them close to him. Look at what he did to Rebekah back in the 20s when she chose Stefan instead.
I also think that he really believed that Mikael was after all of them, and him dageering them and keeping them with him was his weird 나귀, 엉덩이 way of protecting them. Cause after Mikael died, he said they were gonna have a 'family reunion.'
