Scattered between the numerous action-packed battle scenes in 

are several poignant moments featuring Katniss’ (Jennifer Lawrence) emotional journey, one of which director Francis Lawrence calls his very favorite.

“For me, it all sort of whittled down to that scene with Jenn in the kitchen of her house,” Lawrence says. “I just think her performance is really good and it sums up what the movie’s about it. I really enjoy that.”

The scene – in which Katniss reflects on the personal toll of warfare following President Snow’s death, near the end of the movie – was filmed as part of an arduous shoot spanning an exhausting 155 days. Both parts of 

were shot simultaneously, taking the cast and crew to locations in Atlanta, Paris, and East Berlin, where the final day of filming took place.

“We’d been away from home for a long time and so that was emotional,” the director recalls. “It was a relief to be done, but it was sad to be over.”

So sad in fact, that Lawrence and his three stars were caught crying on set after filming finally wrapped. (Yes, really).

“I cried for sure,” he confesses. “There were a lot of tears and a lot of hugs …it really felt like the end.”
