I can't answer about the vampires, since I never got that fad either, but I've loved zombies ever since I knew what they were. I think everyone has a certain mythical creature that they love.
Well, technically, zombies are mythical, since they are/were real. Not in the way they are in the movies though. People that practiced in vodo made zombies with mind-control, IIRC.
