Why is this even a question!!?? :D Seriously, I don't think it only makes him "cool" but it's the essence of the character that he's the child, the troublemaker. In my opinion, if you dislike him for his immaturness, you fail to grasp his beauty. He's the "light side" of the Fellowship and the truly innocent one. And his immaturness is a great contrast to his honesty and courage, and wits, which he does show for one in tricking Treebeard to see what Saruman had done. And he developes through the story well enough but not too much. Hence, the option "He was mature enough in the end." I think the story needed a character like him, for every possible reason. To be the light side, the innocence, the mischief, who though causing trouble also happens to bring fortune too, and I think most essentially - to be the character to show that even the most immature child can remarkably grow up during a war.

He's beautiful. And I'm glad he's not like the american Dennis the Menace, who messes up things but always meaning well to someone or something. Pip's heart is in the right place and sometimes he causes trouble just because he's curious and he doesn't always mean well, even though not necessarely bad either AND Pip also does things on purpose. Even the Palantir incident was in the end deliberate as he knew he shouldn't but did it anyway but partly it was just his innocent curiosity.

I feel bad for Pip in FotR though. Gandalf's scolding was unnecessary mean after the skeleton went down the well because Pip lightly touched it. Well, ok, something smaller went down b/c of that and the whole damn thing only after Pip wasn't careful enough but seriously, you do NOT tell someone to "throw yourself in next time and rid us off your stupidity". xP All in all, in FotR Gandalf seemed to be nothing but angry at Pippin. But oh well, they all knew Gandalf, and how troubled he was, and that anyway it wasn nothing personal, so Pip probably didn't think much of it for long.

But anyway... I really think his immatureness is the essence, and very essential to the story in many ways.

Since hobbits come of age at 33 and he's only 29 (revealed in the books), he's technically still a teenager - he's meant to be immature at times.

Pippin is awesome because he's funny and laid back :) He's like the outgoing teenager out of the four hobbits. Love him.

It's a key part of his personality and it brings a lot of humour to the story. You have to remember that he's basically a hobbit teenager.
