When Lucas said that to Brooke I felt really sorry for brooke cuz she believe that. Its like Lucas loves Brooke but he didn't save anything of her but he did save thing of the girl he don't love just to remind himself how much he hurt the one he loves? just don't make sense!!

i dont trust either motive. i have to admit lucas saying that to brooke never really made sense to me, but i wouldnt hold him saving stuff from a perosn against him or say its because he loved peyton. just like even though i am a brucaser i wouldnt say that lucas keeping the letters means he's still madly in love with brooke (as much as i would want that to be the reason) but i woudl sort of expect him to still have them somewhere. it may just be me but that sort of stuff imo is not stuff you just get rid of, even if you move on. kinda like in gilmore girls how they have boxes full of stuff from their exes. i dont expect people to get rid of everything about a relationship and i dont expect them to have it all out in the open either. but it doesnt have to mean anything.

Anyways, I agree with Broody_4_Cheery.
Keeping the letters because he wanted to remind himself of how he hurt Brooke? Doesn't that seem a little off to you?
But at the time, he didn't Love Peyton. He had no feelings for peyton, because if he really did he would not chase after brooke. He only STAYED with Brooke because he was afraid to hurt Brooke, as he admits in 4.16, but when he originally went after her he was madly in love with her. And I don't think he would lie to her. He doesn't lie to her face, he only lies to himself.
Anyways,I think that at the time he wasn't even sure himself why he kept the letters. He did not know his motive. He THOUGHT he was pining for Brooke, when really in his heart all along he longed for Peyton. But then when he realized his heart's desire, it was too late... he was already in another relationship, and had feelings with Brooke... just not as strong as his feelings for Peyton. And when Brooke left him, he was afraid to stand on his own two feet... afraid to be a man and face his heart's desire and go after Peyton, that's why he struggled and tried so hard to go after Brooke in those first few episodes of season 4, he NEEDED her to protect him from his own heart. But then he realized it wasn't worth it. He needed to face the truth and tell Peyton how he really felt, and stop being a coward by being afraid of rejection, or being head over heels in love with someone. Anyways- I don't want to drag out my hypothesis so I'll keep this short and go back to the point.
At the time, he was misguided and thought what he wanted was Brooke, so he tried to quickly make up an excuse for brooke and himself as to why he kept a box of old things about Peyton. (A little stalker, don't you think? lol).
Anyways- so neither motive really makes sense. :D

Well I belive it was bcause of Brooke! He even told her that and you could totally see how much he loved Brooke back then.

He loved peyton thats why he kept them not because he want a reminder thats STUPID!
