Chapter 1: Something to believe in

As she looked over the town of Rosedell, the few-storey brick buildings, the trees, the shops, the square, the park, and the grey sky above to match her mood, Irene Thorne felt very 쓴, 쓰라린 indeed. Every once in a while she had these moments of doubt when she had absolutely no idea why she'd done what she did, and why she'd decided to suffer the consequences of her actions. She felt like she was as trapped as all the rest of them, and for what? As she walked down the stairs in her manor, situated perfectly to look over the center of the town, as if to make sure no one would ever even think about doing anything against her, she passed 의해 her mirror and stopped. The mood was even affecting her looks. There were bags under her beautiful, green eyes, and her thin face looked somewhat paler that day, and her long, black hair hung lower, somehow. Still, she had a job to do as the mayor of the town, and as she marched out of her house, she couldn't help but to hear the thunder struck. It was going to rain soon. As if she needed anything 더 많이 to ruin her day.



Irene's least 가장 좋아하는 part about walking down the streets towards her office a few blocks away was the people she was prone to pass 의해 every morning and every night. She saw the young sheriff with her excessively long, red hair and tazer she liked to wave around as some sort of sign of power. The fool. None of them knew that the only one with power in that town was Irene, and no one else. Irene passed 의해 one of the teachers, the one who always read fairytales to the kids. Which was something the mayor did not approve of at all. Then she passed 의해 one of the reports, a young man with messy, brown hair and a curious look in his eyes, as if he knew something he shouldn't know. He always worried Irene. In truth, all of the men in the town did. And it was all because of the prophecy, wasn't it?

"Remember, the sleeping curse can be broken, like all curses", the Evil Queen's magic mirror tried to remind her, but had she listened? No. Instead she'd turned to her young, beautiful apprentice, Elsa, and told her to take the 사과, 애플 and 의해 whatever means necessary, get Snow White to take a bite of it. And she had succeeded, of course she had. Elsa was a promising student with the best teacher anyone could ask for. But like the mirror had warned her, all curses can be broken. And this one had been broken 의해 the thing the Evil 퀸 hated 더 많이 than anything in the world. True love. Snow's prince Charming had found her in the glass coffin her dear seven dwarves had put her in, and planted one, simple 키스 on her lips, and just like that, she was awake.

She told her to take the 사과, 애플 and 의해 whatever means necessary, get Snow White to take a bite of it.

The Evil 퀸 had been there to witness this event, in her own way. She'd been watching through the magic mirror, and once Snow White had sat up on the glass coffin and let out an insufferable breath of laughter, the 퀸 had promised herself that she would not rest until she had ruined that girl's life once and for all.
It took the 퀸 a long time to figure out a curse powerful enough to not be broken 의해 a simple thing as a true love's kiss. This curse, as the warlock who'd given it to her promised, would rip everyone in the land to a place with no meaning, no time and no true reality. It would be a hell on earth, only none of them would know it. Only the 퀸 would remember. She could no longer even understand why she'd chosen this curse. Why she hadn't simply killed Snow, and Snow alone. Perhaps it was because over the years she'd gathered so many enemies, and the only way to dispose of all of them would be to strike at once. So be it. But as the warlock had handed her the curse, he'd told her to read the back of the page. For there was a prophecy of the only thing that could break this curse. The 퀸 had feared for it to be another true love's kiss, but no. The prophecy went: "One 일 shall a boy be born, a boy with the power to break the curse, to release the victims from their ignorance." At that time the 퀸 had paid no mind to this. What boy could possibly be a threat to her?

The Rosedell police station was a relatively small building with two stories with the office spaces on the first floor and the cells on the 초 floor. The staff was relatively small, but then again, so was the town. The beautiful blonde named Rachel Leslie was the one in charge (she was incredibly young to be a sheriff, but no one really even remembered how she'd become one) with two deputies, Aline Morrison and Tyler Hale.
"What's going on?" Rachel asked as she got inside. She had tied her long, blonde hair - which matched her blue eyes well - in a braid to keep it out of the way, and she was wearing a black leather jacket, for the weather was still pretty cold. She never bothered wearing a uniform, and neither did her deputies.



"Theft", Tyler Hale was a pretty dark, serious guy with messy, black hair and green-brown eyes, but despite his angry nature many of the girls in town had a thing for him. Rachel, however, wasn't one of them, and neither was her other deputy, Aline. She was, in looks, the opposite of Tyler with her delicate features, long, blonde hair and hazel-green eyes. She was holding onto James Ford, a man with messy, blonde hair and dark stubble on his face. He was no stranger to the police station, he had been arrested for small crimes time and time again, but he was always released. Sometimes someone felt bad for him and bailed him out, and sometimes Rachel decided to let him go because they needed cell space. It was needless to say that Rosedell did not suffer from excessive criminal activity.
"Again? Didn't we talk about this?" Rachel asked in amusement as Aline begun to drag James towards the cells. "I told 당신 to come back with a 더 많이 creative crime 다음 time!"
"Maybe when I'm in a 더 많이 creative mood", James muttered before they disappeared out of sight, to the stairs that led to the 초 floor.



Meanwhile in the local 식당 the waitress, Maria Michele, was scanning the place for customers. It was still early, but soon enough people would round up for breakfast and coffee, as they did every morning.
"You've been working really hard lately", she turned around to find the owner of the 식당 and the inn it was attached to, looking at her from behind the counter. She was beautiful, maybe a few years older than Maria herself, with long, brown hair and brown eyes. Maria was beautiful as well with her blonde hair and blue eyes and kind smile.



"Yeah, well, I'm saving money", Maria said. It was true. She lived with her stepmother and her two stepsisters, who, to put it kindly, were not fond of her. And she desperately wanted a place of her own with her own terms.
"You know, I have offered 당신 a place. 당신 could stay at the inn, I wouldn't mind", Celine said. That was just like her, to offer a favor, expecting nothing in return.



"No, I need to start trying to make it on my own. Thank you, though", Maria didn't have time to say much else when the door to the 식당 opened and people started walking inside. As Maria was taking the orders, she walked over to the 표, 테이블 where her good friend, Nic, and their two friends, Ian and Paul Salvatore, the handsome brothers who were the center of attention for 더 많이 than a few girls in town, were sitting.
"I would like an omelet", Ian yawned. "And some coffee. 당신 know, Nic, it isn't an absolute must to get up early on a Saturday."
"For 당신 it isn't a must to get up early ever", Paul muttered, but the younger brother looked tired as well, his sandy-blonde hair 더 많이 messy than usual.
Nic merely smiled. "I couldn't sleep. I kept having this dream, and well, it was..."
"Can we get that coffee?" Ian interrupted.
"What about your dream, Nic?" Maria asked in concern.
"I'll talk to 당신 about it later."
Maria nodded, walking back towards the other tables.

Sitting on that chair in front of James's cell for the past half 시간 almost made Aline give up. Interrogating him seemed pointless since every time he gets caught, James never tries to explain his motives, but she had to know why he keeps stealing.
“It was certainly not for the luxury of the setting” she thought with a snort. She has to ask him one last time.
"Come on James, you've got to have a good reason to carry on stealing." she pleaded, while keeping her eyes locked on his as if it could maybe make him say the truth.
For a moment, she thought she saw a brief hesitation in his eyes but she couldn't be sure as he averted his eyes almost immediately.
"Here's a 질문 for you, Goldielocks. Why can't 당신 just accept that some people are just villains? " he replied with a smirk.
Before Aline could even reply with a snarky 코멘트 of her own, Rachel's voice rose behind her back.



"You're not a villain. Just a criminal." she said with a smirk.
"Just when I thought I could aim higher..." he continued, now clearly amused 의해 the situation.
"Seriously, I don't know why I even bother" said Aline, now irritated. "He's all yours." she said to Rachel while grabbing her leather 재킷, 자 켓 and then stormed out the door.
"Blondie's got attitude. What do 당신 have in store for me, blondie?" he said while raising an eyebrow.
"Blondie? Really? That's all 당신 can come up with?" said Rachel, while taking a step towards the cell. "You could have just told her why 당신 스톨, 훔친 those groceries."
"And what fun would that be?" he smirked once again.
"Quit the attitude." She was no longer in the mood for games. "You know, 당신 had a shot of getting out of here 의해 telling her your reasons. If she was right and 당신 actually did it for a good reason, 당신 can be sure she would have fought like hell to get 당신 out of here. It's just who she is. Always trying to save 로스트 causes." For a moment she just waited for an answer but he just kept silent. "Anyway, 당신 won't be so lucky with me. A night in this cell will give 당신 enough time to think about that missed opportunity." and with that, she just walked away.

Ines just wanted this 일 to end. She had been working for ten straight hours and finally here she was, in the doctor's office, waiting for the last patient, Nicolas Grace, to come in. She was going through his file when Dr. Theo Eaton entered, followed the said patient. The doctor was a tall man with dark hair and brown eyes. He was really handsome and of course, he attracted a lot of women that seemed to take appointments for the only purpose of seeing him, much to the nurses' dismay as they we're overload with work.



"So you're having trouble sleeping?" resumed the doctor briefly.
"Yes. I keep having these dreams and when I wake up, it feels like I don't get rest at all." Nic explained.
"Well. I don't think it's too serious but let's take a quick sight test to make sure it's not because 당신 need glasses." said the doctor with a smile, and turning to Ines he added "Please, call Fatemeh and ask her to bring the eye chart."
"Right away."



A few 분 later they were all in the office and ready to start the test.
"Right. So Nicolas, I need 당신 to tell me what 당신 see right here" explained Dr. Eaton while pointing at the last line of the chart.
"Okay. I'm ready" said Nic, while putting a hand over one eye. "I see a ring drawn here. Then a bow. " The doctor pointed at the third element of the line. "A Sword. 다음 to it, a crown and finally a mirror."
Ines and Fatemeh looked at each other. Was he kidding? How could he see drawings, it made no sense.
"Nic, I pointed to 당신 the letters "O", "D", "T", "M" and "Q" but I guess that it can be mistaken 의해 the objects 당신 just named." said the doctor "My 조언 is to go 집 and get some rest. Your state could be caused 의해 stress. 당신 work at the newspaper if I'm not mistaken?"
"Yes. Do 당신 think it is linked?"
"Most likely. Just do as I say and come back if it gets worst."
After Nic got out of the hospital, he remembered that today was the last 일 to return Children's and Household Tales 의해 the Grimm Brothers at the library. Looking at the dark clouds approaching swiftly, he hoped he could reach the building before it rains.

When the Evil 퀸 noticed dark clouds obscuring every bit of sky that was visible, she was pleased 의해 the way it all seemed to come together in order to celebrate her victory. Vengeance will be hers at last.
Her thoughts were interrupted 의해 the arrival of the only person that could make it possible.
"Your highness" the man said while bowing to her.
"Huntsman. 당신 are going to do something for me." she said while taking a few steps towards him.
"I will do as 당신 ask."
"Good. Because 당신 see, I need one final ingredient for what will become my greatest accomplishment, and 당신 will provide it to me."
"What is it, your majesty?"
"Well your 심장 of course, my dear." she said with a wicked smile.
Before the man could even make a move, she stuck him against the 벽 and ripped his 심장 from his chest.
"You couldn't give me Snow White's, yours might as well do."
As the body of the Huntsman's body fell to the ground, the Evil 퀸 dropped the 심장 in her cauldron. Suddenly, the earth began to shake and the sky darkens to become as black as the Queen's soul. The stained glass windows began to crack as the Evil 퀸 laughed evilly, welcoming the darkness in. As the world shatters around her, her last thoughts were of Snow White. "Evil is going to win this time and I will get my happy ending."

When Nic finally reached the library, it was already dark outside and Nadia was about to close.
"Sorry to come so late but I remembered that today is the due 날짜 for this book and I wondered if 당신 could give me the 기사 we talked about." said Nic with an apologetic look.
"It's okay. I'll make an exception for you" she said with a wink and both went inside.
"Just wait for me here. Grab a book 또는 something because it might take a while." she said before going upstairs to her office.



Nic looked around for a bit, unsure of what to do. He never had the chance to explore the 도서관, 라이브러리 and he might as well do that now in the meantime.
He started to look at the different bookshelves before reaching a section he never entered before. Delighted 의해 his discovery, he walked towards the end of the aisle where he spotted a red gleam on the brick wall. Intrigued, he put his palm over it, thus activating the mechanisms of a secret door. Curiosity got the best of him and 의해 going down a spiral staircase, he reached what seemed like a 둥근 천장, 금고 of some sort. There were great amounts of treasures and various objects that seemed to have been forged in the Middle-Ages. His eyes almost immediately noticed a massive mirror a few meters away from him. It was placed on the 벽 and was bigger than him. Fascinated, he staggered towards it as if he was hypnotized 의해 the wonder. A little voice in his head kept telling him to touch his reflection. It seemed like a dream, he just couldn't take his eyes of it and finally reached for the mirror.



The moment his fingers touched the cold glass, every single memory if his life came rushing back in. It was like he was waking up. He then recognized the Evil Queen's mirror and it all made sense. She had cursed them. Here, in this land without magic.
"Nic! Where are you?" shouted Nadia above him.
Still stunned 의해 what he just remembered, Nic ran upstairs before Nadia had time to begin looking for him and finding this secret room. When he made it back to the hall, Nadia was waiting for him with a bunch of papers in her hands.
"Oh, I thought 당신 had left. Here's the articles" she said while handing them with a smile.
"Thanks. I'll read them at home" Nic said with a rush and abruptly taking them from her hands.
"Are 당신 okay?" She looked concerned.
"No yeah it's fine. I just had this headache earlier and now it's back. See 당신 tomorrow" and without giving her time to reply, he walked out of the library.
He remembered everything and everyone clearly now. He had to warn them about the Evil 퀸 and make them remember too.
It was all up to him now.
