해리 포터 Ok, so nobody wants to spoil anybody. How long do we have to wait before we can assume everyone's read DH?

cressida i higly doubt u read it in 3 1/2 hours because i read none stop and it took with like 12 hours. if u read it in 3 1/2 hours that would mean u read on avg. 29 seconds each page. without 1 break

it's possible to read it in 3.5 hours, but you obviously wouldn't absorb any of the story. it took me 10 hours in total, but with all the food/washroom/sleep breaks, i wasn't done reading until sat afternoon

I read fast. Maybe it was 4 hours. It was definitely between the hours of 9 pm and 1 am, with a 1/2 break as I walked home in the dark. Who cares anyways?

If you haven't read the book, you shouldn't be on the Harry Potter fan site anyway. If you are, you're just asking for trouble.

And unfortuantely, there's just no good way to put spoiler tags over the picks. The question field is too short to hide the question, and images show up on the main page.

Read it in 11 hours. With breaks. Was done on the 21st and I guess that's pretty good considering it came out that day.

I agree with Chel1395. That's what I've always thought.

Edit: Harold, if people started reading HP 1 today, people would have to put SPOILER ALERT on everything, things from the 2nd book! What if they are not done with the 1st book? Can we not talk about the Sorcerer's Stone? Nobody puts spoiler alert on things from the 5th book anymore. Someone could start reading HP in years from now. Face it - on a fansite readers are going to want to talk freely about the topic and a week is plenty of time for those who care enough not to want it be spoiled.

I've read it to myself, and am now going through and reading it aloud with my wife. It's really interesting to see how much more you get out of a story when you read it aloud, particularly a lot of the location descriptions, which I at least tend to gloss over when I read to myself. Reading aloud, I get a much stronger sense of place for each location.

Chel1395, you don't think that people might start reading Harry Potter today, book 1, and come looking for information on fanpop? Asking people to read or watch everything before checking out the spot is ridiculous.

chunkyrice, you phrase the question itself with spoiler in it, such as Spoiler alert: what do you think about character X's death? There's plenty of room to do that, and no reason not to do so. This has been used to good effect in plenty of other spots, and when people don't, they tend to get flak about it.

Yeah, but the way it shows up on the main page shows who's winning. So even if you only glance long enough to see the spoiler alert, you can still see an image of the winners, which would give stuff away in alot of cases.

The question you raise about a new reader is a good one, but with no good solution. And after all, we don't spoiler tag stuff from all the other books. When I'm in a spot for something I haven't completed, I usually assume I'm taking my chances. Of course, I hate it when I get spoiled. There's just not a good answer.

(maybe at some point it would be worthwhile to start seperate "new to", "just discovering" or "spoiler free" spots for really popular stuff? There are sites like that, I guess.)

Why would anyone look up the fanpage before reading the book? IT's your decision, but you have to accept the consequences that you are going to be "spoiled". I didn't look it up here until finishing, there's no reason anyone else has to.

Still need to respect the wishes of those dumb enough to look on fan pages before finshing the book. Not everyone is as fast as us. I finished in under 24 hours :)

I understand having a life and stuff and not being able to sit down and read staright through. I however agree with the fact that people shouldn't be on this type of sight if they don't want things spoiled. I avoided the internet as a whole untill I was finished because I didn't want anything ruined.

ok..I know people dont' want to stop their whole life just to read the last Harry Potter book..but come on! its been out awhile now, an average person can read it in at least 3 days!! not to mention it was all anyone could talk about for the first week or so!! Read the Dang thing or suffer seeing spoilers. Anyway if ur a true Harry Potter fan it would have been read that weekend!

I joined the spot, but stayed away from the Picks and stuff until I finished the last book. Still, there are always little snerts out there on the Internet who just cannot wait to spoil everything as fast as humanly possible so a few 'surprises' were foisted on me without any warning anyway. I wanted to reach through my monitor...

As to reading speed, I read well over 1,000 WPM (1,200-something) with 90% retention. They tested it back in Undergrad school. What Cressida claims is entirely within reason.

And don't forget new readers. My sister just started and she's 7, so she can't exactly go back 10 years.

I made sure I read the book before going back to school. One of my friends reads about 50 times faster than a regular human being so if you hadn't read it by the day after it was released and you saw her, spoilers everywhere.
