Because Lily was offered a choice. She could have "stepped aside" and let Voldemort have Harry. But she didn't, she stayed where she was to try and protect her baby. James wasn't given that same choice.

Best answer. I think the issue of choice is essential here. That's her choice that gave her sacrifice all the power it had. Given the choice, James' sacrifice would have had the same value too. But as 당신 said, he was not given the choice AT ALL.
I think it's because Voldemort would have killed James either way, whether he was trying to protect his family 또는 not. But Snape had asked Voldemort to spare Lily, so she could have lived, but she sacrificed herself.
Same thing with the woman that Voldemort killed with her 3 children in Deathly Hallows, for the wand. He would have ended up killing the 4, so it didn't matter if the woman was trying to protect her children 또는 not.

Which made Severus the most important character in the books, after Harry. Because of his request, Lily was given a choice 의해 Voldemort. Hence the value of her sacrifice directly linked to her choice. Once again, Voldemort had understood nothing. He should have killed Lily right on the spot, without leaving her the choice, disposing of her like he had had with James. No choice, no sacrifice, no Harry, no story. Thank 당신 Severus !
Ya i know! but if severus had not delivered the news of the prophecy to Voldemort he didn't have to do all the things he did.so much for making the wrong choices in life,no??
"If she means so much to,' said Dumbledore, 'surely Lord Voldemort will spare her? Could 당신 not ask for mercy for the mother in exchange for the son?'/ 'I have- I have asked him-' - Page 543, The Prince's Tale, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows
agree with the 이전 answers.i just want to add that James FOUGHT to save his family.Lily didn't take up arms against Voldemort.she pleaded him to spare her child and came between the two even after given the choice to save herself.
when harry goes to the forbidden forest himself,he doesn't touch his wand to protect himself.that's how his sacrifice saves others as well.

James didn't fight either - he couldn't, he'd left his wand in the living room. When he shouts that he'll hold Voldemort off, what he actually means is that the time Voldemort takes to kill him might hopefully give Lily the chance to Apparate out with Harry. But she didn't have her wand either.
