It's what they do.

Blood drinking, fangs, and aversion to sunlight. The others can be debatable. Point in case: no sleeping. The vampires I grew up learning about slept in coffins. They slept during the day and hunted at night.

I was very recently introduced into a lovely series called Cirque Du Freak which changed my whole "they need to have fangs" thing. And I've read too many other vamp books for the other things to be considered criteria.

Except drinking blood. That is something that they need to do.

I'd like to point out that Anthony didn't know why vampires had fangs or where that rumor came from - as neither Vlad the Impaler (the inspiration for Dracula) nor the Blood Countess (both of whom are considered the "first vampires") bit their victims (Vlad didn't even drink the blood). The only thing he discovered was why people thought vampires drank blood (they'd dig up the bodies and see the mouth covered in red liquid blah blah blah...).

Vlad the Impaler has never even lived in Transilvania , because it was under the suzerainty of Hungary.He was a domnitor(it was practically a leader , like a king , but they just had different political organizations), of the Romanian Countries(it's like the souhern part of Romania).He has nothing to do with Transilvania or vampires , they just went with the lenged because he also had the name "Dracula" , and because while his ruleing , he was impaling everyone who were breaking the law , and everyone said that it was because of his thirst for blood.
