The ‘Fear The Walking Dead’ Ratings May Be Becoming A Concern For AMC
Fear the Walking Dead is that it was still the second highest-rated show of the night, behind only the return of
The third of six season one episodes was seen by 7.2 million live viewers. That’s a good number. The bad news is, it’s down 12 percent from the second episode, which itself was down 19 percent from the first episode. In fact, the 7.2 million wasn’t that much better than the 6.95 million who watched the Miss America pageant.
Granted, these are overnight numbers, and with stiff competition from the NFL, they’re likely to grow on DVR (recent episodes have seen a 50 percent uptick once DVR viewership is accounted for). However, Fear was trounced by
, which was seen by 26 million people, while The Walking Dead regularly beat NFL
Thankfully, there’s a new threat on Fear the Walking Dead besides zombies now, which should see interest in the series return in the back half of season one. On the other hand, the third episode did see three of its characters spend part of the episode playing Monopoly, so there’s some reason to be concerned about the choices the series is making so far. I mean, at the very least, they should’ve gone with Boggle — there’s a lot more action involved.

I don’t think the Walking Dead has ever gone up against the first Sunday of the football season. Annnndddd the night game was NY v Dallas. That’s a huge game. I think it’ll be ok. I love it more every week!
Agreed. This is probably just a one time thing due to the football matchup AND it is coming off of a holiday week where they did not air an episode. Always takes people a bit to get back into schedules.
Agreed all around. You have to consider the variables, not just the individual pieces. It’s a lot like Risk. They should have played Risk instead of Monopoly.
Wait, what was my point? Oh, yeah, I need more Rioja.
You realize the “new threat” angle you’ve been spinning is just a continuation of the same threat that has been there the first two episodes, that zombies haven’t even been a real threat yet? It has always been about society breaking down, gradual at first but quickly snowballing as the truth of what’s happening comes out? The military getting involved is just the evolution of the threat, not the introduction of a new one.
Yeah, the “real threat” right now in the series is lack of information and shock. Next the government extermination becomes the threat. Then the zombies become a threat for those that survived.
Come on, it’s Rowles though, you really can’t expect him to have either imagination or cognition.
That’s what Dustin does. He says something really dumb and then latches onto it hard.
After three flaccid episodes, the show continues to suffer from weak scripts and dull characters. There isn’t one character I care about or feel engaged with. I’ll keep watching for the remaining 3 because I bought the season from Amazon’s streaming video. I can’t see this show surviving beyond season 2 unless drastic show-running changes are made PDQ.
It’s almost as if they shouldn’t have taken a break over freaking Labour Day. Seriously wtf was that? Do they think that just because americans have a holiday they will suddenly go out and stop watching TV? You screwed up and broke the momentum AMC. This on you
Anyway stupid holidays aside it usually takes at five episodes before the ratings of a show semi stabilize. And Fear is pretty good so I have no concerns.
Yeah, they took a break because that tends to be protocol there, but agree that they probably should have still not done that. They could have used the momentum.
New threat???? Are there gothy vampires around the corner?
While I agree Boggle is superior to Monoply, Boggle is much too loud to play during the event of a Zombie Apocalypse.
Once again… Headlines here are either “sky is falling” or just out right lies
Well any other cable show would kill for those rating Cardashians included and they aren’t pulling that show off the air anytime soon. Sorry a show 3 episodes in doesn’t have the appeal that a show in it’s 5th season does. I think you just want some click bate on your article
Thank god/tree/raccoon/Sun. Maybe the intellect of the American TV watcher isn’t as shitty as I thought it was. JC haven’t you people had enough of zombie shit?
You can see the parallels between wall street and police brutality in the way the zombies interact with the humans.
Says the guy that has a picture of a mindless sport as his profile picture. There can never, ever be enough zombies.
This show has been boring as shit so far. The only reason I’m going to keep watching is because it’s only six episodes, I would not bother if it was 10 or more.
Yeah, agreed. The first episode, I was glued to it waiting for the good stuff. Fast forward to episode 3 and I had it on only as background noise and occasional glimpses while reading crap online. Still wondering how many encounters Travis has to have before he stops trying to “help” one. “He’s just sick! Put the gun down!”
So your short attention span is the only reason you are watching?
The way you guys think would be 90% of the problem in a situation like that. People are sick KILLKILLKILL!
It reminds me of Principal Lewis in American Dad! [youtu.be]
How dare people be confused and/or sympathetic to humanity at all…
Bring back Tobias and the ratings will increase
That’s ok. I’m sticking with the show regardless.
What could boost it’s viewership is if they can actually incorporate a member from The Walking Dead in the show somehow or someway or have some type of scenario that includes something that has to do with The Walking Dead.
I personally enjoyed episode 3. The rolling blackouts were pretty haunting, knowing full well how much of society depends on electricity alone, never mind the threat of rioting humans and the undead as well.
If you want to build an audience, don’t take a 2 week break between episodes 2 and 3. It’s not like Labor Day came out of nowhere.
They need to make the characters less stupid. I think the overall story/infection progression has been fine.
– Why did they insist on not telling the sister? (Because she’s a girl? To protect her?) She just watched her neighbor eat his wife. I think you can tell her now. – THIS IS IMPORTANT DAD kid has no purpose in this show.
– Kid Kramer is doing nothing but crying for fixes.
– Pacifist Dad is getting a little old. I understand his point of view but when you see someone is capable of killing and eating you from this “sickness” then maybe it might be OK to whack them.
The only badasses are Mom #1 and Dad #2 (Daniel? The barbershop guy) You can see both are ready for some real shit to hit the fan. I’m guessing that Mom #3 dies and everyone goes ape-shit and reality finally sets in by which point the world is already fucked.
Stop making these secondary characters like season 2 of TWD. Everyone knows that was shit. There is so much more potential to make us care about the characters.
Totally on the money about Travis being too passive. However, he did believe Nick’s story…..Kudos for that one! And had the gonads to investigate.
@123 Yes that is true, but at the same time it makes his attitude even more ridiculous. YOU HAVE SEEN IT WITH YOUR OWN EYES! I’m sure he changes his ideals soon since he is the main dude. Writers just need to move it along better.
The female characters are not convincing, bad actors to begin with…. Madison is flat, no emotion and unlikeable. I think Nick and Mr. Salazar and are much better actors, and have the greatest potential for character development. Travis doesn’t seem to be with clue on the eminent danger that is growing, but his acting job is good. This series will get better. If they lose Nick, the show is over.
I love the Salazar family but I think the blended family could all be killed off and I wouldn’t miss them; except maybe Nick. Madison and Travis just seem behind the curve, too me. They haven’t been telling Alicia everything so it makes it hard for me to decide about her; still another strike against Madison/Travis. Chris seems so stubborn he’s going to do opposite of what his father tells him to do, just to spite him, and it will be the smartest thing Travis has said the whole season.
I’m not giving up on it. Its stilled helmed by TWD people and I’m sure they are looking at the feedback for next season.
