Duty doesn't mean anything if you're not happy

Ariel nearly screws everyone over going after their dreams "no matter what" (a.k.a. no matter how dangerous, reckless, selfish, harmful to others, etc), and then the very people who warned her against it bailed her out so she didn't have to learn anything or sacrifice for what she wanted.

I'm not a fan of "ME! ME! ME!" selfishness anyway. It's human nature to go after what we want. I think truly exceptional people are those willing to put that knee-jerk self-serving reaction aside for others who need their help more.

Another reason I think Ariel is retarded going after your dream no matter what, so even if you parents are dying and begging you to come back home...just follow your dreams? That's selfish and heartless against you own family.

Olivia stop using retarded as an insult. It's rude and uncalled for.

But not in the way Ariel does. That's a selfish way to do it...

I think its more important to go after your dreams as long as it doesn't hurt anyone in the process. Ariel's dream may have caused some trouble but that's because its a movie and without trouble a movie is boring. A dream can also be a duty like getting your dream job. Getting a job is a duty, but your dream job is obviously a dream, however it can become reality.

The thing about the message "go after your dream no matter what," they MEAN "no matter what." No matter how dangerous, reckless, careless, selfish, inconsiderate, no matter how it hurts yourself or others, no matter how bad an idea you and your friends/family know it is, etc.

Ariel goes after what she wants "no matter what," and that is exactly what ends up hurting the people around her. (I say them and not her because THEY scurried around saving her tail and she didn't have to deal with the consequences of her actions.)

I just have a real strong sense of duty and I don't think my dreams are worth someones unhappiness which is the result of Ariel's journey (her father's, my brother ran away from home and it broke my heart how it tore my mom apart and when he waws brought back it hurt me to see how raw her feelings were, also she really doesn't care what happens to sebastian which bugs me too)

Going after your dreams is important, but that doesn't mean that you should make a deal with a sea-witch and leave your family behind and make everyone worried. That's called being selfish. Aurora on the other hand was selfless and obedient. She was sad when she found out she was a princess, but at least she didn't run away.

Both are right and wrong, it always depends on the circumstances.

I really admire people who can do that. This is what makes Pocahontas, Mulan, Aurora and Rapunzel are so compelling.
