This is Moana. I have no idea where to place her.
If 당신 guys haven't noticed last time, I ranked the princesses in the exact same order as the DP lineup as a joke. It was inspired 의해 this poll: link
I re-edited this 기사 with my real DP placements, complete with pictures and I also added Anna and Elsa because they're super important to my list ranking. I didn't include Moana because I have no idea where to place her but I know that I 사랑 her a lot!
It's about time I do this list since it seems like a rite of passage here, so here we go. Warning! Warning! Warning! Beware lots of rants and super defensive diatribes. If 당신 only want to see nice words, I strongly suggest 당신 just skip to Rapunzel 또는 just read your favorites only. This is essentially a dumping ground for all my 디즈니 opinions.
She’s too workaholic and is the polar opposite of me. I don’t like what she stands for and what the princess stands for is pretty important to me in terms of favorites. She goes against my personal value system, being all about goals, accomplishment and productivity. 당신 can work your entire life for nothing and it just becomes futile effort and you’ll just burn out. In the end, you'll just lose the time you’ve had. I’m not bashing people who work hard. Hard work is admirable, sure. But already in modern society, we already have a work, work, work mentality that’s over promoted to the point that it’s unhealthy and the last thing we need is a Tiana to “teach” us that hard work is important, as if we were idiots and didn’t know that already. Tiana’s lifestyle and future-oriented and goal-oriented mindset should not be promoted and passed on as role-model worthy. Such a mentality seems to attack the 디즈니 belief of faith (to please and pander to stupid parents) because 당신 can’t control everything. I rather have healthier 모델 of hard work, such as Snow White, Cinderella, 뮬란 and Moana. People deserve to allow themselves a break. They shouldn’t feel like they must be workaholic to be worth something. Also, I don’t like her movie. It’s way too meta that it’s annoying and just pokes fun at and breaks the 디즈니 magic. I think Tiana is the actual anti-princess, not Merida. I 사랑 most 디즈니 princesses (dreamy, idealistic, fun, girly), and Tiana is not like most princesses. On the upside though (trying to be positive here), at least that means she isn't like other princesses. So I'll at least give her credit for being unique. I also like her friendship and loyalty to Charlotte. That's pretty much the only thing I like about her.
The workaholic princess
당신 know, I used to like and appreciate Merida. I used to like how she was a good archer and showed so much passion and dedication to her sport. I liked how her face lit up when she was outdoors in nature and drank fresh water from the waterfalls. I liked how she was a fun sister and 스톨, 훔친 디저트 for her brothers. I liked how she was spunky and stuck her tongue out because it made her realistic and I loved her laugh. I used to sympathize that she was forced to do things she hated. I didn’t like that she fed suspicious cake to her mother and not care when she seemed sick, but unlike Tiana, at least the movie acknowledged her flaws and didn’t put her on a pedestal. I used to call her the modern version of 팅커벨 and Peter Pan (heavily flawed but eventually redeemed themselves/learned their lesson).
Contrary to 인기 opinion, I don’t think 메리다와 마법의 숲 is cliched at all. In fact, 메리다와 마법의 숲 is a fresh take on feminism, as I’ve written in my other article, because it shows that the tomboy is not always the hero. The tomboy is not a Mary-Sue and I think that’s so important. Not all power action girls are ideal/virtuous like Mulan, Katniss and Rey. Tomboys are real people too. Tomboys CAN be damsels just like girly girls can kick 나귀, 엉덩이 (Rapunzel). 메리다와 마법의 숲 adds something to feminism. It’s supposed to be an unexpected surprise. But I digress.
I must be honest here. The real reason I don’t like Merida anymore is because the 디즈니 fandom ruined it for me. Everyone, including Merida 팬 and Merida haters, feels the urge to compare Merida to every other princess out there and I can’t fathom why. Even the other new revivals, Tiana and Rapunzel aren’t compared to that much. No wonder she’s called the anti-princess. It forces me to take sides, and in every argument, I always find myself siding with the other princesses - Snow White, Cinderella, Aurora, Ariel, Belle, 뮬란 (who’s being delegated to a cheap, older, tossed out version of herself while Merida is the new upgrade of 뮬란 2.0), even Rapunzel. Even if I did like Merida more, I would always, always side with the other princesses than her. My dislike is not a straight dislike of the character, but because the fandom ruined it for me and like Tiana, I see her character as an attack on the other princesses.
I know it’s unfair and hypocritical of me because I hate it when the fandom, which is full of shit, ruined Elsa. I’ve tolerated the disrespect of naked Elsa porn and inappropriate sex pictures put all over the internet. I’ve tolerated the “you can’t marry a man 당신 just met”. Since NONE of the princesses actually married the prince they just met (except maybe Cinderella), Elsa couldn’t actually offend them so I personally don’t find that line alone problematic. It’s just the fandom that made it seem that way. I even forgive Elsa when the fandom continually ship her with Jack whats his face, ten thousand other suitors, and most disgustingly, Anna. But I forgive Elsa for all of that because I have that much 사랑 for the character. For Merida, I simply don’t have enough 사랑 for her in my 심장 to not let the fandom disway me. I’m sorry Merida, Maybe your fate will change and I'll like 당신 again.
The fandom-ruined-it-for-me princess
My 사랑 for Rapunzel is growing on me, and I think it's because there are lots of Rapunzel 팬 on here so the 사랑 is rubbing off onto me. At first I didn't get what the fuss was all about, but I like her creative spirit. I’m too lazy to list all of her good traits. She can be perfect but I don't mind that she's perfect because it fits the story. I have nothing much else to say about her to be honest. She's definitely agreeable and 당신 certainly can't hate her. Overall, she's great but I don't feel that strongly about her. I don't really care about her that much. I have nothing against her. I just 사랑 the other princesses more.
The agreeable princess
“I’m not a prize to be won.” She’s strong minded and an independent thinker. Some say she’s a hypocrite because she still needs to be physically saved, but I LIKE that about her. Who says just because someone saved you, 당신 can’t have the right to say your mind? Must your voice be “earned” 의해 physical heroic deeds? That’s just sexist and ableist. It makes her realistic that she’s flawed. Most of us are going to be like Jasmine. Opinionated, a free thinker, but realistically, we’re probably aren’t going around saving lives and that’s okay. She feels trapped and wants to be free. Like Snow White, she holds high standards for her man. She’s not shallow and loves 알라딘 despite him being poor. She lacks 거리 smarts like giving the kid the 사과, 애플 (which shows she’s caring) due to being sheltered, but is smart enough to read through Aladdin’s gimmicks. Like Ariel, she leaves 집 when she can’t get what she wants, and I think that’s better than giving your parent a suspicious cake. Overall, she has flaws and I like flawed characters but still has a good heart. I wish I had her sass. She has a pet tiger which is really cool. I just haven’t seen her movie as a whole in a while, so I feel I can’t judge her fairly enough to put her higher, but from what I've picked up from fans, she sounds awesome.
The spunky princess
It pains me to have her this low. She’s such a role model. She’s compassionate, smart, brave, selfless, elegant and doesn’t judge people 의해 their looks. She’s dreamy, head in the clouds, imaginative and actually appreciates 판타지 and fairytales for once (which is very rare nowadays). She’s a bit perfect. I can only name her borderline flaws. Like being stubborn but that shows that she’s a strong, independent woman. 또는 going to the West Wing but that can be seen as daring and curious. And when she runs away and tells the Beast to control his temper, that proves she does NOT have Stockholm Syndrome. I don’t think she’s snobby. She simply doesn’t relate to her townspeople.
Belle is smart. I hate that people dismiss her smartness just because she reads books. Not everyone is 거리 smart and Belle is 더 많이 book smart, which is STILL a smart. It’s implied that Belle is good at abstract logic type stuff. 영화 tend to give these simple clues to indicate that to the audience. I can’t remember the exact words but 몽구스 said something like the fairytale 책 she read were thick, so it’s not like she’s 읽기 책 for dummies. And who are we to talk when we WATCH fairytale movies? It’s bad enough that the rest of the world basically mocks 디즈니 영화 for being childish just because they’re fantasy. It’s even worse when we apply that self-stigma to ourselves. This is why I don’t like Tiana because she so resembles that modern attitude against anything fun, magical and imaginative, reducing them to stupid. But I digress….Being smart isn’t ALL about manipulating people and never making mistakes. Everyone makes mistakes. Even geniuses make stupid mistakes. Don’t tell me you’ve never made a stupid mistake 또는 else you’re lying. Does that mean we’re dumb if we make a mistake? Such a perfectionist attitude is something a Tiana would hold (but even she kissed a damn frog). Oh dear, I’m digressing again. Sorry fans, for shitting so much on Tiana but now 당신 can see what I mean when I think that Tiana is anti-other princesses and why I resent her so much.
The perfect princess
신데렐라 is so emotionally strong, the most emotionally strongest princess. I look up to her so much as a role model. What others call doormat in Cinderella, I call assertive. Yes, 신데렐라 is assertive. She’s balanced, sensible, wise, practical and has COMMON SENSE. She knows that she can’t talk back 또는 do anything because if she does, she'd get into deeper trouble. This happens when 아나스타샤 finds Gus in her 찻잔 and 신데렐라 still gets into trouble even though it's an accident. Most people don’t know what’s it like to survive abuse. It’s very, very hard and it’s not nice to bash victims for not being strong enough. Cinderella's already strong enough for making it so far. Most people in her situation would have died - yes DIED - either from suicide due to low self esteem 또는 beaten to death 의해 their stepfamily. So don’t hate. 신데렐라 follows COMMON SENSE - not some vague “feminist” ideology. She puts practicality in front of pride. She’s a SURVIVOR. Being aggressive all the time in order to be “strong” is so overrated. Walt 디즈니 created 신데렐라 to be a feminist role model. 신데렐라 strikes the perfect balance between aggressive and passive. She’s assertive. As others have said, she politely points out to her stepmother that every maid is to attend the ball. A passive person wouldn’t have done that. A passive person wouldn’t have gone to the ball when the opportunity comes. A passive person wouldn’t have told Bruno to get the key. A passive person wouldn’t have eagerly run down the stairs. A passive person wouldn’t have prepared the 초 slipper after the first one breaks. 당신 might think, ”Oh geez! If I had a fairy godmother, I would have gone to the ball too! That’s easy!” Not if 당신 were abused like her 당신 wouldn’t. Like I said before, most in her situation would have such a low self esteem that they wouldn’t do it. Like Elsa, who’s actually passive and denies herself of any happiness because her self esteem is SO LOW that she feels like she doesn't deserve it. 신데렐라 is not only emotionally strong because she’s sensible, she’s also able to hold her self esteem and self worth despite all this. She still BELIEVES she DESERVES a better life. That’s why she’s feminist because as a woman, she knows her worth and what she deserves. A passive person would be so deep in self hatred that they would be too morose to go to the ball, they would sulk in their room instead of getting the key and they would self sabatoge and not bother to come downstairs because they believe they’re worth so little. Imagine being called a 부엌, 주방 girl all your life, being mocked, teased, humiliated and have your mother’s dress torn. She’s also calm, patient, gentle, kind and optimistic. She's not shallow and falls in 사랑 even while not knowing that Charming's the prince. She's not a gold digger desperate for a man. All she wants is a fun night out from her dreary life. She’s a bit perfect (the only flaw I could think of is that she gets distracted which is why she gives it away to Tremaine that she danced with Charming, as Silverrrose 또는 someone said), but I like what she stands for. She’s the epitome 디즈니 character and 디즈니 story and means hope, belief, faith and dreams. 당신 can’t control everything. But 당신 can keep believing, know your worth and seize opportunities as soon as they come.
The sensible princess
Like the classics, Aurora and Snow, she’s a well-layered, complex character with subtle nuances. She’s adventurous yet cautious. Wise yet irresponsible. Playful yet elegant. She’s mischievous yet serious. She’s judgmental yet open-minded. She doesn’t lose her personality. She’s just a complex character who matures and grows and has different sides to her.
The cool princess
Her heroism makes her an epic character. She’s undeniably brave, selfless, determined and proactive. She has a chill vibe. She seems agreeable and friendly but still speaks her mind sometimes. She doesn’t 사랑 societal standards but is reluctantly dutiful, which is why she’s lazy but that’s what I like about her. She thinks that rituals like matchmaking are stupid and aren’t worth any 더 많이 effort than required, while noble deeds like saving a country are given full concentration. She knows a meaningful cause when she sees one. She’s unique in the sense that she’s an obedient rebel. She follows orders and wants to make her family proud. She’s not rebellious simply for the sake of rebellion. She truly thinks a certain way. The way she likes Shang and is such a fangirl about him is cute. She’s also funny, especially when she takes a bath at the lake and avoids her three friends. Most of all, she’s humble and that’s what I admire so much about her. It’s one thing when was does good, heroic deeds, it’s another thing when they’re still humble about it. I am truly impressed.
The epic princess
5. Snow White
Snow White is independent and assertive. Yes, 당신 read that right. She’s independent and assertive. Independent because she doesn’t need her prince WITH HER to be content. She still dances with the dwarves and laughs and smiles. She doesn’t chase her man around like a foolish, desperate wife. But she’s still romantic and loyal. She holds high standards for her man to come to her. Like Cinderella, she can make the best of her situation but still have hope that her prince would come. Also, it’s stupid for her to go out anyways when the 퀸 wants her killed. Like what did 당신 expect Snow White to do? 검색 for the prince herself and get herself killed 또는 fight a 퀸 who has access to magical spells with her bare hands? She’s assertive and negotiates with the dwarves to let her stay (hmmm, and isn’t it feminists who say that women need to learn negotiating skills?). Snow White can actually be quite bossy. She’s the leader, even if it wasn’t originally her home. She’s the decision maker and everything is her idea. Let’s look for a house! Let’s go inside the house! Let’s clean the house! Let’s go upstairs! Let’s sleep! Let’s wash our hands! She really got the dwarves on the hand washing. For those who say that Snow White “just sits around and waits for her prince”, I can offer a laundry list of everything Snow White does. Just because she cooks and cleans doesn’t mean she’s an unfeminist, submissive housewife (and this comes from someone who HATES cooking and cleaning). The first princess has the most realistic and attainable body shape (flat chested and chubbier), yet faux feminists complain that 만화 are bad for body image and that Snow White is outdated.
Walt 디즈니 did such a great job at creating a complex, 3-dimensional, layered and subtly nuanced character for her. She’s bossy, sassy, sweet, optimistic, polite, caring, non-judgmental, motherly, romantic. Like someone else said, she wants Grumpy to like her and even prays for him. She’s really 메리다와 마법의 숲 because even after facing the scary woods and knowing that her stepmother wants to kill her, Snow White is still 노래 a song about sunshine. She’s naive and innocent, but such traits are trashed nowadays, which is why people think she’s outdated and unfeminist. Like I said before, Belle isn’t stupid for going to the West Wing, Ariel isn’t stupid for signing Ursula’s deal, Snow White isn’t stupid for eating the apple. They may be stupid mistakes but they don’t prove that the person is stupid. Snow White is no passive doormat. She lets the witch in, not because she’s a doormat, but because she wants to be extra kind. Even after the birds shoo the witch away, she still INSISTS on being welcoming for the sake of kindness. Yes, she’s too naive and trusting, but I can’t believe people would blame the victim instead of blaming the witch’s evilness and manipulation (which is kind of the point???). That just show how far down we’ve gone as a society. Trustworthiness is now seen as a 출처 of mockery to take advantage of, not a virtue. Some say that Snow White is saved because of her looks. They’re missing the entire point of the story. No, Snow White is saved because she’s a good person. Good prevails evil. The 퀸 is beautiful too but she chooses to be jealous and evil. That’s why fate punish her and reward Snow White.
The first one is the fairest of them all and deserves her respect!
The interesting princess
Aurora is a complex, well-layered character with subtle nuances. I’m too lazy to sing the virtues of her character, so I’ll just copy and paste here from AudreyBrooke and AudreyFreak since they did a good job of that and made me 사랑 her.
“Briar Rose spends a lot of time in the woods, where she observes animal behavior and indulges in her hobbies of 노래 and dancing. She obviously knows the 동물 very well, which implies that she desperately wants socialization and, in the absence thereof, is doing the 다음 best thing (in this case, playing with woodland creatures). Aurora may be shy and socially awkward, but she doesn’t want to be. In her dreams, she’s a coy and confident girl who has captured the 심장 of a prince. Whenever I see people pinning her as an introvert, I always end up contemplating it myself. Is she really an introvert, who gets energy from being alone, 또는 a sheltered extrovert making the best of an unstimulating situation? Remember, extroverts aren’t necessarily outgoing. An argument could be made for either type, which flags her as an ambivert, in my opinion: both introvert and extrovert. Aurora has all the social need of an extrovert combined with the introvert’s perceptive nature. On 상단, 맨 위로 of that, Aurora shows a sense of responsibility when she plans to have Phillip meet her at 집 with her ‘aunts’. Instead of riding off into the sunset with her handsome stranger, she wants to get to know him better in a controlled setting, under the supervision of her family. Her maturity also comes into play when Aurora has to abandon those exact plans. Sure, she cries, but wouldn’t you cry if 당신 found out that your entire life was a lie? She has a realistic emotional response. And really, choosing to go to the 성 and fulfill her duty as princess could not have been easy. But she knew that everybody was counting on her and that she had to put her own wants aside for the benefit of everyone else. That’s self-sacrifice done the right way.” - AudreyBrooke
“unlike a lot of characters who have little screen time, we learn a lot from her in hers. We learn she's elegant, shy but confidant around her friends, mature but very playful, a bit of a "cheerful pessimist" (she's cheerful for the most part but lets things get her down easily), she's a hopeless romantic, she wants to do the right thing, and she loves daydreaming. Sounds like a personality to me.” -AudreyFreak.
She also said something about being a Fantasia like character where 당신 have to figure her out and learn a lot about her from the little details.
Like with Ariel, I like what she stands for. The philosophy is opposite of Tiana’s. This may annoy Aurora fans, but Aurora is associated with sleep. That’s why the movie is called SLEEPING Beauty and makes a big deal out of it. That’s why when 당신 wake up, it’s dawn (her name is Aurora). Sleep represents rejuvenation. A new beginning. And when Briar Rose wakes up, she becomes Aurora and is at the dawn of a new chapter of her life, refreshed and ready to rule her kingdom. Sleep is symbolism in the movie, which is why I don’t blame casual 디즈니 팬 for having Aurora as their 가장 좋아하는 DP "because she likes to sleep."
She's also very princessy and possesses a magical quality about her.
The ethereal princess
I feel like most of the princesses don’t act their age and are 더 많이 mature, but Ariel is refreshing because she acts like a REAL teenager. Like Jasmine, I like her because she’s flawed and realistic. I 사랑 her romantic and dreamy side - how she has a crush on Eric and the way she admires and falls head over heels for him. She’s very relatable. She’s immature, irresponsible and forgetful and misses her concert, which reminds me of Mulan, because she probably thinks the 음악회, 콘서트 is stupid and pointless (like many things in life. 당신 can see that I’m as jaded as them). But she isn’t a completely horrible person and has good intentions. She’s a normal human being (er, mermaid).
She’s brave, but also reckless. The first scene with the 상어 foreshadows her character. She really lives in the moment instead of being future-oriented (like Tiana). She’s not careful; 가자미, 넙치 notices that the shark's coming for them, but Ariel's too busy admiring her fork. Same like when she’s on land with Eric. She wastes no time worrying about the spell, when she could just lose herself in the present moment. 가자미, 넙치 and Sebastian get frustrated that she hasn’t kissed Eric, but Ariel isn’t concerned about seducing him. She’s too busy learning everything she can about humans and making the most of her time, which I think is such an underrated quality nowadays, and naturally gets Eric’s admiration. She’s a solid type B person.
I don’t think she’s selfish. It’s not fair to call her selfish, because the other princesses are exceptionally selfless (Mulan, Belle, Rapunzel) so already the curve is wrecked for her. I would say her selfishness level is in the middle, like an average person. It’s unfair because that’s like calling Aurora a coward just because Snow White, Belle, Pocahontas and 뮬란 are exceptionally 메리다와 마법의 숲 in comparison. I can’t believe that chasing your dreams would be considered selfish. Is Ariel supposed to live the rest of her life unhappy under the sea and not stand up for what she wants? I don’t think her issue is selfishness, it’s recklessness. She’s willing to take risks, and that can be seen as a good 또는 bad thing. She even says, “but I wouldn’t see my father and sisters again” before signing Ursula's deal. It’s not that she doesn’t care about her family. Saying that would be like saying that Ariel doesn’t care about herself because she puts her life at risk, which defeats the purpose of selfish in the first place. Like I said with Belle, I don’t think it’s dumb that she makes one mistake. What others call dumb in Ariel, I call daring. And like wavesurf said, she does do selfless things. She saves Eric first and 가자미, 넙치 and the others. The fact that she risks her whole life for her true 사랑 Eric is very selfless (and romantic and proactive). I like how she’s feminist because she plays the male role in romance and approaches the guy first. I also like what she stands for - female empowerment and voice, but also that the seaweed is greener on the other side. She’s adventurous, curious, fun, rebellious and bold. I wish I could live my life as freely and bravely and spontaneously as her.
The fun princess
1. Anna and Elsa
The Arendelle sisters <3333
No one has impressed me as much as the Arendelle sisters for their selflessness, loyalty and general awesomeness. They’re both very relatable and realistic.
Elsa is a complex character but I’m not going to fully explain why otherwise this 기사 would be too long. She’s dutiful, reserved, careful, pessimist, passive, fearful, perfectionist, playful, sassy, mischievous, wise, caring, artistic and misunderstood a lot. It’s refreshing to see a female character who struggles internally and has to overcome internal flaws. Elsa is a people pleaser and has spent her life bending over backwards to please others and be out of the way. She gives up easily. Even though she’s a passive people pleaser and may seem weak, she has a sassy side, which makes her complex. There’s just something sassy about the way she comes out when she sings Let it Go, as if that side of hers has been buried deep. She looks sassy, and oftentimes characters are visually drawn a certain way on purpose, so I consider that her “hidden” characteristic. She’s also very selfless, sacrificing her own happiness for Anna’s safety, so that Anna could go live her life in the sun. She tries to be responsible but screws up a lot and ends up looking like she doesn’t care when she actually does.
Anna is highly spirited, bubbly, outgoing, sociable, optimistic, fun-loving, adventurous, naive, trusting, awkward, clumsy, romantic and dreamy. Like Ariel, her eagerness and zest for life is inspiring. She craves freedom and spontaneity. She’s fiercely loyal and selfless, never giving up on her sister no matter what. She’s 메리다와 마법의 숲 and kicks ass. Though she’s flawed, she has a warm and generous heart. She’s bold and not afraid to speak her mind.
To me, Anna and Elsa are two sides of the same coin - different sides to one person. Every person has a little Elsa and a little Anna inside of them. It’s up to us to let the Anna inside us win over the Elsa in an internal struggle to confidence and letting go of our fears.
