I saw this 질문 so often around the 포럼 and club in general, I wanted to give my answer. I’ve been firmly Captain 백조 since the bean-stalk, so keep that in mind while I point out all of Hook’s shortcomings.
I believe there are many reason to this dislike of Hook.
When Mary Margaret and Emma first met Hook, he was working with a woman who had just murdered an entire village, lied to their faces and was planning to double 십자가, 크로스 them. Snow knew him 의해 reputation as a ruthless pirate captain, and repeatedly told her daughter not to trust him. He later ripped the 심장 out of Aurora to give it to Cora and imprisoned all of them.
Lets, please, not pretend he his a lot better than Regina. That he didn’t kill, maybe even in cold blood, and cheat and lie to get revenge. The numbers may be different, but it doesn’t change the ‘sin’. He may not have enacted a curse to make everyone as miserable as he was but that’s just because he couldn’t exactly ask Rumplestiltskin for help in learning magic. In this show being consumed 의해 vengeance isn’t really a good starting point for a character to develop from. It’s not an easy thing to let go of, and even when 당신 do there is still a good long bit of road ahead. Regina’s resilient 심장 hasn’t magically become light again just because she gave up her quest to kill Snow, and she loves her son; it’s still plenty dark when Robin gives it to Rumple, and when she gets it back. I’d bet Hooks 심장 isn’t much lighter.
That said, I think the Charmings rooted for Neal mainly because of their own experience: their first 사랑 was also their Soul Mate and True 사랑 and they want that kind of 사랑 SO badly for Emma. I have my doubts that they can actually 덮개, 랩 their minds around the whole concept of having 더 많이 than one chance at true love, especially Mary Margaret, who saw first-hand Regina's reaction to losing Daniel.
A few people pointed out that 당신 could actually see Snow thinking “My daughter just 로스트 her True Love”, when Emma tells her Neal is dead and hugs her. I hadn’t noticed this when first watching the show, but it’s true and it does make sense. She firmly believes in the "one love, one chance" thing because that has been her experience.
Let’s not crucify her for that, she means well.
At some point Emma tells the Charmings that while they are her parents, they are the same age, have equal amounts of wisdom and wildly different life experience. The Charmings 사랑 is so perfect they share a heart. Emma 심장 was broken so badly (by Neal and 의해 being an orphan) she felt for a long long while like she could never 사랑 anyone, not even her own child.
Henry… well, I have the strong feeling they saw Henry as a confirmation of Neal being Emma True Love: not many fairytale princesses I can think of, have a child with one man and then go and fall for another.
Tragedies? Yes. Fairytales? No.
Neal was a car thief, the son of the Dark One and, at best, a bit shady, yes, but he was also Emma’s son’s father. The boy’s existence gave him a better chance at winning Emma back, because she would have thought of her son’s feelings and of who would make a better 또는 at least stabler father figure for him.
Meanwhile Hook had been living for revenge for a few centuries here: not great relationship material 의해 any standard 또는 in the best of circumstances. Add to it that he is "a one handed pirate with a drinking problem” (as Pan calls him) and no parent, ever, would think him a good choice for their daughter. Hook is fun and a pirate, he teaches the kid to navigate and to cheat at dice. To the Charmings he is a step above a nomad: he would make no kind of stable father of husband, if he’d be there to do the job at all. That they would not like him is no stretch of the imagination. David calls him "a thief and a liar" to his face, in the same episode, and the implied "killer" is pretty clear, too. Two episodes later he is ready to 펀치 Hook in the face again for 키싱 his daughter. And Mary Margaret looks pained 의해 the entire declaration in the Echo Cave.
He is like the male version of the Evil 퀸 in their minds. He may redeem himself, but win the 심장 of their precious daughter? No, thanks. The "Close the door behind 당신 and send in the 다음 one” kind of no.
Snow also gives him a couple of dirty looks when he flirts with Emma 또는 anybody else: why all the hate? Because she has the morals of an old lady: she married her first love, who, while he may not be a prince in terms of genetics, is one in moral high ground and heart.
Notice here that Charming never really flirted with Snow, never made jokes 또는 winked while courting her. I just rewatched the entire first series and I could not find one instance where they flirted (please tell me if I missed it, I will go back and rewatch, because them not flirting at all makes me like them less) before they were about to marry. They are so sweet around each other they risk giving us caries most of the time.
I believe Mary Margaret, and perhaps Charming, too, see the fact of Hook cracking jokes 또는 flirting with everything that moves as evidence of his not being serious about his 사랑 for Emma. They haven't seen him turn down the girl his men paid for him in the pub, at a time when his hopes of finding Emma again were slim at best. They don't know that the flirting and winking and joking routine is really armor against being hurt 의해 사랑 once more.
Oh, he IS a flirt and a little bit of a man-slut... let's admit it people, he is: how many girls did he have around him in the pub in the season finale, when Emma distracted him? Three? Do we really want to pretend he was just planning on playing dice? But the fact stands that Emma DID distract him even when he didn't know her, and that when he loves his 사랑 is an all consuming force in his life.
He made a deal with Pan to save his brother, then became a pirate (a life he previously hated) to avenge him.
He fought for Mila against the Dark One knowing he couldn't win, and when she was killed and he 로스트 his hand he became Captain Hook without blinking, then set sail for the only place where he'd have the time to concoct a way to get revenge, a place where he had vowed never to return.
He even carried around Baelfire sword for a few centuries...!
These are not the actions of a man who doesn't take 사랑 seriously. But, again, the Charmings know none of this. They know only the devil-may-care pirate, who tried to kill the Dark One and Belle, and 스톨, 훔친 a bean, lies frequently, betrayed quite a few alliances and who knows what else.
Again, let's not crucify the Charmings for their protectiveness, they do mean well and, to bottom line it, they respect their daughter enough to accept the choices she makes even when they do not agree (see Emma holding Mary Margaret back while Regina is ripping out the 심장 of a 로스트 boy).
BUT I do hope that will change in the new season: Hook and Charming did have a moment, in the season finale, and maybe, just maybe, David will remember that.
The pirate WOULD go to the end of the world, and give up everything for Emma, he hasn't just given lip service to the idea, so maybe Charming will be swayed. Killian loves from the bottom of his soul and would sacrifice everything for those he cares about, and I think David saw that. I also hope that now that Neal is permanently out of the picture (I read somewhere that Michael Raymond-James left the show definitively), Snow will decide to focus all her matchmaking let’s-find-Emma’s-true-love efforts on Hook.
I was so sorry when Neal died, because I did like him a ton, even if I didn’t want him back with Emma. I know some SF shippers said that Hook being so much older than Emma and having been with Bae's mother is creepy, and held it as the main reason for all the hate, but the fact here is that Neal wasn't that much younger.
This show doesn’t play much with 사랑 triangles, in fact, they din't exist before Hook-Emma-Neal, so it was kind of obvious at some point one of them would have to go, either pack up and leave 또는 die, and I hoped it would not be Hook, so I kind of got my wish.
Captain 백조 is happening!!!
(We just have to be patient a bit longer, while Emma sorts out her feelings about how she hurt Regina)
kisses all around
(PS: pictures aren't mine, i just googled "Captain Swan")
