When it comes to Disney and mobile apps, there are pretty much two things you can rely on: first is that there is almost always at least one tie-in app/game for a movie; second is that Disney Digital Books has consistently been releasing near flawless apps that go well above and beyond expectations. ‘Big Hero 6: Baymax Blast‘ betrays neither of these. In fact, I would go as far as to suggest that reading this review would be a mistake as it will take away from potential play time. Nonetheless, here it is.
For all intents and purposes, ‘Big Hero 6: Baymax Blast‘ is defined as a ‘runner’ type game. You take control of Baymax as you fly through the streets of San Fransokyo, recovering Hiro’s stolen microbots while simultaneously capturing energy to keep Baymax’s battery levels sufficiently high. Working against you are obstacles such building structures, traffic, construction signs and — the most evilest of all — towers of microbots under the control of Yokai which pop up out of nowhere. In typical runner game fashion, the controls are simple: swipe left, right, down and up to avoid the obstacles. Hitting construction signs won’t kill you, but they’ll take a toll on Baymax’s battery level. Hitting anything else, however… and I did mention traffic, didn’t I? Of course Baymax likes to fly against traffic, so while you’re flying towards the vehicles (cars you can fly over, trucks you must swoop over and cable cars — well, just avoid them altogether), they’re coming at you, which adds a nice little element to standard play. Also, while each run starts of deceptively slow and easy, the difficulty level and speed will increase the further you fly.
The game has two forms of currency: microbots, which are collected during gameplay, and lightning bolts, which are awarded by completing the game’s achievements as well as rarely being found as a power-up during gameplay. With the microbots, you can unlock characters such as Hiro and Go Go who can aid Baymax as well as unlocking Baymax in Silver and Gold armor variants which provide additional benefits. Microbots are also used to purchase and upgrade inventory such as tech boosts as well as other items and features. Lightning bolts, on the other hand, help to extend gameplay when you crash and allow you to purchase upgrades for Baymax which are often required to unlock the ability to purchase consumables. Although everything can be earned during gameplay, in-app purchases do allow you to stock up on the in-game currency, but it is a bit costly.
That said, not only will the cute spot-on graphics and entertaining soundbites keep you going, but so will the achievements and missions, both found under the challenges menu. As previously mentioned, completing achievements will help you earn lightning bolts, while completing sets of missions will increase your score multiplier as well as
unlock story elements which include both text and actual clips from the movie. So while the items can be pricey (Gold Baymax costs 250,000 microbots), grinding for the currency isn’t a chore.
Plus to assist you, there are several power-ups that can be collected (or manually activated if you have unlocked and purchased them with microbots) such as magnets to help collect either the microbots or energy, score multipliers, one-time use shields and even a jet mode which puts you inside almost a mini-game that allows to you to collect microbots without having to worry about obstacles. As an added bonus, you can have multiple power-ups active at any time and microbot purchases allow you to upgrade them to allow for longer activation time. The Lucky Cat is yet another power-up (which can be purchased for 2,000 microbots at will) is a virtual slot machine that can award any number of prizes including up to 7500 microbots or pages from Fred’s Secret Files, a collection of fun, exclusive art that details each
Available now on the Apple app store for $3.99, ‘Big Hero 6: Baymax Blast‘ is an amazing time killer that helps bring the fun and charm of the big screen production to the iDevice. It’s a stellar complement to the film which could stand well enough on its own, even if the film didn’t exist.
