Okay, so one of the things i 사랑 best about this show was the way in which it had a subtle commentary on gender roles. I know, 당신 may ask "so, what?" 또는 "why is this important?" Well, I'll tell you.
Often, females are portrayed as supporting characters to the all-important male protagonist. Here, this is not the case. While i am indeed a guy, i like to see that screenwriters have progressive attitudes when it comes to gender roles. If 당신 notice, Katara is the one who brings Aang along with her, not the other way around. Often, she plays the teacher and not the damsel in distress.
Toph is, for obvious reasons, a very progressive take on a female character. I mean, i loved watching her totally PWN3 the guys like the boulder 또는 watever. Her character gave great representation to the tougher 더 많이 independent females of the world. And she did 더 많이 saving than Aang for a good part of the series lol.
My third and 가장 좋아하는 take on the female is Azula, just because of the way that she is placed in a position of power and is widely feared by...like every dude in the show no kidding, Although shes like ozais 초 in command, Azula is fiercely driven towards her own goals rather than just his and she is her own person, as most of the females in the show are. (idk about suki tho) My absolute 가장 좋아하는 moment in the show was when Azula took Ba Sing Se and tricked Long Feng.
That being said:It was great watching these three characters because of the way they defied the "typical" role of a female in media.

When people to talk to me about Anime, i never fail to mention my faverout shows- but whenever 아바타 the last airbender crops up, people instantly jump on the fact that its apperently not a 'real anime' and im sick of it! What rite do they have to sneer at me for my taste in anime?! Just because 아바타 is a low budjet creation, heavily influenced 의해 american culture and obviously made for kids TV, it doesnt make it any less of a good show, right? I mean really, a show doesnt have to be full of spectacular art work and totally unique ideas to be enjoyable! I dont know about 당신 guys, but presonaly i think that all the above mentioned makes it a genarelly 더 많이 easy-going and light hearted show thats great to watch when your in need of a little no-brainer, fun TV!
