On an 흐린, 흐린 날씨 day, in mid May maybe, Akita woke in his den. Once again, the soft pile of pine needles that composed his 침대 were scattered all over the cave floor.
"Damn those nightmares," he muttered to himself as he used his fluffy tail to sweep them back into a pile. "Fourth time this week I've had that dream."
He'd been having the same dream on and off for the past four years, ever since his mate died, but now, coming up on the fourth anniversary of the event, they were coming every night now.
"God damn it, Rose, why did 당신 have to chase that bear? Why?" he asked the ceiling. Receiving no response, as usual, he left the cave, stepping into the clammy mountain air of his native home, Jasper National Park in Alberta, Canada. This had been his 집 his entire life, and he wouldn't dream of moving. Ever.
Passing what was held as the best creek to drink from, he spotted Eve on her morning rounds.
Inwardly, he shivered. Even the sight of the fearsome Alpha was enough to make his 본즈 quiver under his skin. She had never been mean to him personally, but the stories that he had heard made him certain to stay as far as possible from her, lest he incur her wrath.
Once he had crested the 다음 hill, his adrenaline returned to normal. He was always ready to bolt around Eve.
His lustrous brown coat, one of the thickest in the park, even in the dead of summer, protected him as he bullied his way through thickets of thorns and branches to a rabbits 굴, 덴 he had discovered a few seasons back. He had kept the location 안전한, 안전 from others and whenever he wanted an easy snack, he came here.
Sure enough, three rabbits were in the hole. He reached a paw down into the hole and poked one of them.
초 later, the rabbit shot out of the den, right into his waiting paws. The kill was quick and painless, at least for him. Who knew what the bunny was thinking?
About ten 분 later, the rabbit was mostly gone, safely tucked away in his stomach, with only the 본즈 leaving evidence of the kill. He swiftly buried them, making sure that the scent of the rabbit was covered 의해 his own.
Akita cleaned the blood of the rabbit from his 모피 at the nearest stream. Thus refreshed, he set out on the 다음 leg of his trip; the 굴, 덴 of his best friend, Delneco.
Delneco, also known as Deke, was an Omega, like Akita himself, but smaller, with a 코트 of wiry gray 모피 and a white underbelly. While Akita's eyes were a solid 초콜릿 brown, Deke's were a bright, vivid blue flecked with green.
Deke, as always, was sitting outside his den, ready to go on an adventure with his lifelong friend.
Today, the plan was to go play-stalk the Alphas of the pack as they went on their rounds, but not Eve. Definitely not Eve.
"Who do 당신 want to stalk today, Delneco?" Akita asked, poking fun at Deke's slightly unusual name.
"Well, Akita," Deke said, jabbing right back. "I think that Napoleon would be a good target today."
Akita laughed. Napoleon was the very small, French Alpha of the united packs. He had the shortest temper of all the Alphas, and when he was irritated, which was often, he tended to curse in French.
Akita laughed at the suggestion at first, then actually thought about it. Napoleon might be annoying, but it was definitely funny when he tried to yell at someone.
"Good plan!" Akita said, tail wagging up a storm. "Now where is he?"
Deke was kinda cool in the way that he had a great memory. He could instantly recall anything that he had ever heard. And now he was using that skill to recall the Alpha patrol routes and times. They were the same every day, which made it even easier for Deke's smart mind to remember them.
"The target is just now passing the howling rock," he said after a second.
Akita's tail started wagging even faster and he smiled, ready for the tease.

A half 시간 later, the two Omegas had the target Alpha square in their sights. As was Napoleon's custom, he had climbed up to the 상단, 맨 위로 of Howling Rock, checking every cave on the way up, and now he was on his way down.
Deke and Akita waited halfway up a tree, ready to drop down 다음 to Napoleon at the right moment.
Akita waved to attract Deke's attention, and pointed down, holding up three of his toes.
Deke nodded, and looked down, tracking Napoleon through the thick web of branches.
Akita crept out on the branch, ready to pounce.
A 초 또는 two later, Napoleon walked right into the drop zone. It was fortunate he had looked up when he did, otherwise Akita and Deke would have landed right on him. With a mighty oath, he lept clear of the falling Omegas, who fell to earth with a mighty thump.
"Damn you, 당신 imbeciles!" he shouted, distangling himself from the thorns of a rose bush.
Deke and Akita just laughed at this.
"What is this 당신 are laughing at? It is me, is it not?" he demanded, pulling free with a 타이타닉 lunge. He picked himself up and shook.
Napoleon was so short, the tips of his ears barely touched Deke's chin, but that had never stopped him from commanding respect, and it certainly wasn't going to now.
"Down!" he barked.
Akita and Deke immediately dropped.
Napoleon circled them for a moment, just looking at them.
"I try to devise a fitting punishment for the two of you, but mine never work," he said after a minute.
Deke gulped.
"Leave them alone, Napoleon!" came a commanding female voice. Kate.
Akita instantly felt himself relax. Everything was going to be fine.
"Napoleon, go." Kate glanced at Akita and Deke and sighed.
"But these hooligans-"
Kate cut him off with an angry look. "Oui, madame." He turned and left, shooting an angry glare at the two Omegas.
"Guys," Kate said once Napoleon was gone. "You gotta stop messing with Napoleon, okay? He keeps telling me that he wants 당신 two out of the pack."
"Sorry, Kate, but we just can't help it. His accent is so funny when he's mad!" laughed Deke.
"I don't care, okay? Just stop. 또는 I'll have to kick 당신 out."
That sent a pang of fear through Akita's heart. He didn't want Kate pissed off at him.
"Yes ma'am. We will," he said, jabbing Deke in the side with his elbow.
Deke nodded in agreement.
Kate smiled, her brown eyes losing their icy glare.
"Thanks, fellas. Now go do something productive, okay? I hear Lilly's about to slap Garth, so that might be a good place to start."
"Thanks, Kate," Akita said as Kate walked away.
"Dude, you've got a hard on for Kate!" Deke said accusingly.
"I do not. My 심장 remains with Rose," Akita insisted, although what Deke had said was true. Kate was incredibly sexy.
"Uh huh..." Deke said, his eyes showing his true nature.
